Hibernian v Ross County (Premiership)

Hibs are seeking to bounce back from weekend disappointment when they host Ross County at Easter Road on Tuesday. It is a game that is likely to be a tight affair, with few goals.

All of the Edinburgh side’s last four matches have ended with more than three goals, but this has largely been because they have been conceding in significant numbers. In these fixtures, they have conceded at total of 12 times, scoring just six themselves. There is likely to be a focus on keeping things tight at the back, which has been the case in two of their previous four home wins, with those games ending 1-1. This is particularly the case as they will be without a number of key attackers, including long-term injury issues Aiden McGeady and Kevin Nisbet, as well as top scorer Martin Boyle.

Ross County may be slowly improving going forward – they scored three in a surprisingly entertaining weekend win over St Mirren at home – but on their travels they have found goals hard to come by. Indeed, they have netted only twice away from home, while their six road fixtures in total have yielded just 10 goals in total. Their last three away matches have seen one goal or less.

Historically, this has been a fixture of few goals – five of the last seven have produced under 2.5. When these sides met on October 1, Hibs ran out 2-0 winners in Dingwall, and a similarly tight encounter should be forecast at Easter Road.

Motherwell v Celtic (Premiership)

Motherwell face a serious challenge on Wednesday when league leaders Celtic come calling at Fir Park. The Well have lost six of their last seven matches and were last in action on Sunday, when they were edged 3-2 by 10-man Hearts in a thrilling away match. Celtic, by contrast, have had a day more to recuperate after an equally dramatic 4-2 home success over Dundee United.

The home side come into this game as huge underdogs due to their recent run of form, but for all that they have lost eight of their 14 league matches this season, seven of these have been single-goal losses. Included in this number is a 2-1 defeat to Celtic in October. Remarkably, they have lost 2-1 on five occasions this season.

Celtic should, therefore, respect that Motherwell have a threat. Indeed, the home side have scored in five of their last six games, despite their wretched form. Similarly, the Hoops have conceded in six of their last seven league matches dating back to their shock 2-0 loss to St Mirren in September – their only blemish on an otherwise perfect season to date.

High-scoring wins have been a staple for Celtic this season, with the attitude being that they are capable of scoring three or four in every match, even if one or two are conceded. Indeed, the Celts have netted 17 times in their last four league games. 

The guests are aiming for a 15th win in succession over Motherwell, where they won 4-0 in a League Cup quarter-final as recently as October 18. It would be surprising if this game were as one-sided, but there should be goals and there should certainly be an away victory.
