This underdogs treble stuck out on the Scottish League Cup card.

A £10 bet returns £169 if all three selections win.

Saturday's Scottish League Cup Underdogs Double

Fixtures for: Saturday 26th July

Queen’s Park v Cove Rangers

Scottish League Cup

15:00

Cove Rangers Draw No Bet

Cove Rangers have it in them to cause a major upset in Glasgow at the weekend, with the League One side with the knowledge that winning away to Queen’s Park may well propel them into the last 16 of the competition.

The Aberdeen club travel south, having not conceded a single goal in their three games to date. Paul Hartley’s men may have been unspectacular going forwards, netting only four times in four games, but their iron defence has ensured they remain highly competitive.

By contrast, Queen’s Park face a tricky season, which has already been illustrated by the fact that they have lost to League Two opponents Spartans already. The Spiders did claim a 5-0 home win against Brechin City, but the Highland League side have proven to be entirely uncompetitive, so this was little surprise.

With QP having nothing to play for in this game and the onus on Cove Rangers to get the victory, I think the odds on the visitors are excellent. I’ve curbed this bet a little by going DNB due to Cove’s comparatively weak attack, which makes the odds of 2.60 on them winning the game outright a little less attractive.

Stranraer v Queen of the South

Scottish League Cup

15:00

Stranraer Double Chance

Stranraer have completely defied my expectations of them in the League Cup so far, losing only one of their three fixtures. A home encounter against Queen of the South offers Chris Aitken’s side a legitimate shot at continuing their good form before the League Two campaign begins.

The Blues might not have won a game in 90 minutes yet, but they have been competitive in all three games they have played. They upset Championship opponents Ross County in their opening match of the season, and against a team they consider to be local rivals, they will want to put in another good showing at their Stair Park home.

In particular, Stranraer have impressed with their defensive qualities, conceding only one goal in three matches, all against teams expected to beat them.

Queen of the South, meanwhile, have hardly shone thus far. Their only victory came against an Edinburgh City side that has really struggled, while the Dumfries outfit have a bad habit of toiling away from home. Last season, they won only five of 21 matches away from home in all competitions.

The visitors are playing their 4th match in 11 days, and with qualification no longer possible, they may well rotate ahead of the league opener next week.

Dundee v Montrose

Scottish League Cup

15:00

Montrose Double Chance

Dundee are a team that absolutely cannot be trusted to get the job done against anyone at the moment, with new manager Steven Pressley under pressure just three games into the season. Already, the former Scotland centre back have found himself the target of memes deriding his performance at Dens Park, and there’s so little quality in the squad, it’s difficult to see where a turnaround might come.

The Dark Blues’ sole success came via a 3-1 win against Lowland League side Bonnyrigg Rose, but they were stretched even in that fixture, scoring twice in the last four minutes to get the win on neutral territory. Meanwhile, they have already lost against League One opponents in the form of Alloa in this competition.

Comparing the results of Montrose and Dundee club-for-club in this competition, the Mo have done better against each opponent. Of course, they come into this match as underdogs, but they are well priced given the problems the home side, who have already played twice this week, are facing.

Dundee should win this fixture, but I think the price Montrose are to become the latest side to upset their hapless hosts is too strong to ignore for bettors looking for a nice longshot.
