📈 Southampton v QPR Form & Stats

Southampton have been very streaky under Tonda Eckert. Currently, they are on a good run, although they will be disappointed not to take all three points at home to Charlton at the weekend. The draw extended their unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions, but a win in the Charlton game would’ve put Southampton level on points with Birmingham, just a place outside of the play-offs. Time is still on the Saints’ side, but wins are imperative at this stage.

It has also been nine matches in a row that Southampton have scored, in all competitions. Their 1.72 xG per match at home in the Championship this season is the second highest in the league, and has roughly maintained under Tonda Eckert’s stewardship, though it has reduced slightly. Defence could still be classed as a concern as they have conceded 1.4 xG per match on average under Eckert, but the display against Charlton was an improvement in that regard.

QPR are terrifically unpredictable at the moment, both from a performance perspective and in their results. To exemplify this, their last six results in the league have been two wins, two draws, and two defeats. It was a highly impressive win last time at play-off sitting Hull City, smashing them 3-1, but that came off the back of a 1-3 defeat at home to Blackburn. Most unusually, though, they heavily won the xG battle in their defeat to Rovers and then lost the xG battle handily at Hull.

All of QPR’s seasonal data in terms of goals and expected goals is incredibly close. Whilst this doesn’t necessarily indicate that their matches are tight affairs, it does demonstrate that a mid-table position is probably right for Rangers at this point in their season.

📔 Southampton v QPR Formation & Team News

Southampton could be ready to welcome Shea Charles back from injury. This could be huge for their play-off chances, as Charles has been instrumental for them before his absence.

Charles would take his place in a 4-2-3-1 shape, but James Bree and Leo Scienza are doubtful after being taken off during the match at the weekend. Ross Stewart is likely to lead the line, with plenty of choice in behind him. Only Jay Robinson and Mads Roerslev are ruled out on a long-term basis.

We aren’t expecting much change from the QPR XI that won at Hull for this match. Julian Stephan set the team up in a 4-4-2 shape with Richard Kone being partnered with Rayan Kolli. Daniel Bennie is really pushing for a start with a fantastic goal in his last substitute appearance, but I expect Kolli to remain as a starter for now.

There is no new injury news to contend with, but rumours of Ilias Chair’s imminent return from injury have to be a positive. Chair may make the squad here, but likely won’t be starting matches at this stage.
