Out of form Watford travel to St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon, hoping to set straight a run which has seen them winless in their last five Championship matches, a return which has resulted in them dropping out of the play-offs.

Saints have shown some encouraging signs in recent weeks, picking up seven points from their last three Championship matches, there are lingering hopes of an unlikely play-off push in the coming months.

📈 Southampton v Watford Form & Tactics

Southampton present somewhat of an unknown quantity at the moment, after a honeymoon period of scoring goals for fun under Tonda Eckert, they hit much leaner times and went six consecutive matches without a win. However, seven points from their last three league games points to brighter times ahead.

The Saints are enduring an underwhelming campaign after relegation from the Premier League, they currently sit in 14th place and seven points off the play-offs. Rather notably, the Opta Analyst xG table does suggest there’s been a big underperformance from them, they currently sit in 4th, on 8.3 points more than they currently have, a significant figure.

Watford are experiencing a lean period at the moment, going without a win in their last six games in all competitions. It’s a stark contrast from winning their previous four matches, and experiencing one defeat between the 1st November and 1st January, a 13 game stretch.

Their recent poor form has seen them slip out of the play-off places, they’re now in 8th position, but importantly just three points off the play-offs. Watford’s underlying numbers are fairly representative of their position in the league, with the xG table having them in 7th, on 1.5 points more than they currently have.
