📈 Barcelona v Real Madrid Form & Tactics

It’s been a fantastic first half of the season for Barcelona, their unflinching tendency to win games finally saw them overtake Real Madrid in the title race, they’re now four points clear of their title rivals, with the same amount of games played.

The Champions League has proved slightly more troublesome for Barcelona, with just 10 points from six games. Despite a fairly average points tally, they’re still well set to secure qualification to the knockout stages of the competition. Barca are a winning machine at present, winning their last nine matches in all competitions and scoring a healthy 26 goals.

Real Madrid’s form has improved after a shaky period of results during November and early December, they’ve now won five games on the trot. Despite coming out the blocks at rapid pace and taking themselves to the summit of La Liga, Real Madrid now find themselves four points below Barcelona, there’s a feeling they can’t afford many slip ups from now onwards.

Real Madrid have been fairly solid in the Champions League, picking up 12 points from six games, defeats against Liverpool and Man City certainly suggest there is room for improvement though.

📔 Barcelona v Real Madrid Formation & Team News

Barcelona’s defensive line is one of the boldest things i’ve seen in the modern game, but it’s hard to argue with how effective it has been for Hansi Flick during his time at the club. Barcelona have won LaLiga, and this trophy, using this bold approach - though it certainly relies on having devastating players in the final third.

Barcelona are lucky to be blessed with options in the final third to call upon with the likes of Yamal, Rashford, Raphinha and Fermin Lopez all expected to be fit for this clash. Barcelona are missing Ronald Araujo who is on personal leave, and are also without Gavi, which is a bit of a blow in the middle of the park.

Despite Gavi’s absence, Barcelona have two players in midfield who are a joy to watch and control games incredibly well. Pedri gets a lot of the plaudits, but De Jong is just as important next to him to ensure that there is solid protection.

Real Madrid are still finding the right systems and shape under Xabi Alonso, who seems to want to prioritise structure and control over anything else. Madrid’s approach isn’t as bold as Barcelona’s, but they still have the attacking talent to push most sides back into a deep defensive block. Barcelona won’t play like that here, so Madrid may actually get more joy in forward areas than they’ve been used to under Alonso.

Real Madrid’s backline is still a little broken with Rudiger and Eder Militao out of the side. Brahim Diaz is still at AFCON with Morocco, but wasn’t expected to be heavily involved here even if he was available.

📊 Barcelona v Real Madrid Key Stats

  • Each of the last eight head-to-head meetings have seen at least three goals.

  • Real Madrid beat Barcelona in the most recent head-to-head clash between the sides.

  • Barcelona beat Real Madrid 5-2 to win the Spanish Super Cup in the final last season.
