Tottenham Stats: Where will the goals be coming from?
The headline news coming out of the Spurs camp this summer is the departure of captain Harry Kane. After years of speculation, links and rejected bids, their star striker finally got his move. He opted to join Bayern Munich in an £86 million deal. This move could prove to be great business for Spurs or a detrimental loss.
The issue for them is that Kane was responsible for a huge portion of their goals. He scored 30 in the Premier League alone last season which was a phenomenal feat that has perhaps been overlooked because of Erling Haaland’s incredible 36-goal season. Kane hit 54 shots on target last season meaning he had an average of 0.46 goals per shot on target (excluding penalties).
The second-placed player in the side for shots on target last season was new captain Son Heung-Min. He had 38 attempts on target last season from a total of 81 shots. The winger has always been the sidekick to Harry Kane, but with his newfound role as captain, he will need to inspire Spurs to success. Ange Postecoglou will also look to Brazilian number nine Richarlison. The former Watford forward endured a poor first season for Spurs, scoring just once in the league. He will need to step up this term and show his new manager that he can be Kane’s replacement up top.
Man United Stats: ten Hag’s side lacking shots
Man United are the team tasked with stopping Postecoglou’s Spurs, and if they perform as they did in their opening game, it could be a long evening for United. They managed just three shots on target against a depleted Wolves side under a new manager, whilst Wolves doubled that SOT tally. United will need this to improve otherwise or they may succumb to Spurs’ new front-foot approach.
Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are usually the men Man United look to for shots on target. Last season in the PL the two had a combined 81 shots on target while the rest of the squad managed just 110 combined.
Rasmus Hojlund recovering from injury will certainly help United’s cause but he’s not expected to come back until later this month at the earliest. Although, ten Hag has occasionally bent the truth in the past and he could be around sooner than we think. He averaged 1.37 shots on target per 90 last season whilst playing for Atalanta.

🎯 Tottenham Offensive Stats: Son to seek out shots
As mentioned prior Son Heung-Min has been given the armband at Spurs. The South Korean will also need to improve on his attacking numbers from last term to remain a key forward player under Postecoglou.
This shouldn’t be a problem for the 31-year-old who already has one Premier League golden boot to his name. He averaged 1.18 shots on target per 90 in the league last season and managed to score ten goals as well as contributing six assists, but will be looking to improve on those numbers this time round as Spurs’ main man.
🎯 Man United Offensive Stats: Fernandes to fire United forwards?
Spurs aren’t the only side with a new captain. Just last month it was announced that Harry Maguire would be stripped of his role as club captain to be replaced by United’s Portuguese dynamo, Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes has been in and around the top of the standings for both goals and assists. This season will be no different. He managed 16 goals and assists for United in the league last season, which was his lowest so far for the club – which shows how high his usual standards are.
The captain has an excellent record v Spurs, having scored in the home game and assisted in the away trip last season. Another enticing option for goals and assists, there’s something about this fixture that makes Fernandes raise his game.
🛑 Tottenham Defensive Stats: Kulusevski to get stuck in
One of the key battles of this match will come down United’s left flank with Marcus Rashford likely to be operating on that side of the pitch. His opposite number Dejan Kulusevski will be looking to stop him before he can advance up the pitch himself.
Kulusevski lost 28 duels last season, the second most of any Spurs player. Failed tackles often lead to frustration which can lead to fouls. The Swede also committed the third most fouls of any Spurs player, only Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cristian Romero had more, but both are unlikely to start here.
🛑 Man United Defensive Stats: Wan Bissaka on for fouls?
Man Utd right-back Aaron Wan Bissaka has had quite the resurrection under Erik ten Hag. For a while it looked as if a return to Crystal Palace might’ve been on the cards but he fought for his place and is now a starter once again.
Wan Bissaka’s strongest attribute is his tackling; he is absolutely brilliant at it. Last season he won 92% of his tackles, the highest percentage of any player at the club. But in United’s opener, the right back committed three fouls and showed signs of weakness on the ball.
He will be up against Heung-Min Son who is going to be fed the ball a lot without Harry Kane in the side. And with that, there will be plenty of opportunities for Wan-Bissaka to commit fouls – an intriguing market to consider when placing a Tottenham v Man United bet builder.
