Newell's Old Boys v Platense
The first match on this Sunday is a match with lots of players missing on both sides. Platense have been without their defence for a couple of games as Augusto Schott, Haibrany Ruiz Diaz and Gaston Suso missed the last few games. Platense lost each of their games without them and only Suso may return to the starting XI this game.
On top of that they have been hit by a new injury wave, as Gonzalo Bergessio, Nicolas Gomez, Ignacio Schor and Nicolas Bertolo are all struggling with physical problems. According to manager Claudio Sponton all are in serious doubt to make this game. It means that they may miss six of their regular starters, which seems a bit much.
Newell's are also missing a few players as Pablo Lema is injured and both captain Pablo Pérez and Julián Fernández are suspended. It means that their normal defensive midfield is completely gone. With Argentina U20 captain Juan Sforza they have a decent replacement for Pérez and the midfielder has already been important for Newell's this season.
Platense have already shown that their defence is abysmal without the three starters. They might have one possibly back for this game, but several strikers in doubt as well. Newell's are missing less players and the replacements don't seem such a downgrade compared to the ones from Platense, so I don't see Newell's dropping points here.
Tigre v Rosario Central
The last game from this weekend features one of the biggest surprises of this season. Tigre came up from the second division and were dubbed a relegation candidate. But seven matches into the season, they are sat in a play-off spot and that is not flattering at all. They have dominated most games and even their only defeat was completely undeserved. It is not that they score a lot of goals, the 4-0 last week was an exception against a decimated Platense, but their defence is airtight.
They have only conceded three goals so far and there is no team in Argentina that conceded less after seven games. Rosario Central are not doing well this season. They lost the last two games in their own stadium and both were painful defeats. Three weeks ago they got thumped by the just promoted Barracas Central and last week big rival Newell's had the better of them. It cost manager Kily Gonzalez his job and Leandro Somoza took over. Rosario is the first ever job as head coach for the 41-year-old former Argentinian international.
Somoza announced some changes in the team, but it seems unlikely that the inexperienced manager is directly going to turn things around at Rosario. That's why I'd put my money on Tigre continuing their good run in the top division with a victory.
