Meizhou vs Wuhan
🏟
Sunday 7th August – 12:30PM KO
Wuhan started the season well, winning the first three games and looking for a while like they may challenge at the top. They picked up four points from the following seven matches however and sank down the table to finish 11th.
It could get worse. The club is struggling financially and there are noises coming out of the club that they are struggling to put a team together for this game. It may well be that there are youth players who line up but whatever team does make it are unlikely to have much motivation and are unlikely to be in the best of mental health. It is hard to see Wuhan getting anything from the game as confidence was already low after the run of poor results.
It means that the onus will be on Meizhou, a team that has been quite solid in its first season in the top tier, losing just two of the first ten and winning three. They were first focused on being hard to beat and then tried to be a little more expansive though with mixed success.
They didn’t however, face the best teams in the league and they know that after this game, that they will face three of the top four in the following five games and that is going to be a real test. This opening game then really is a must-win to get some points on the board, get into the top half and ensure that there isn’t going to be any drop down towards the relegation zone.
Meizhou have a solid defence with just nine conceded but will be attacking in this game with their opponents on the ropes financially, and Wuhan may be able to nick a goal but Meizhou should score more.

Henan vs Beijing Guoan
🏟
Sunday 7th August – 12:30PM KO
The big news from this game is that Henan’s home stadium is open to fans for the first time this season. The capacity is limited to 30 per cent but all 8,400 tickets were quickly sold out and there is real excitement among fans. The atmosphere should be excellent and it should provide a real boost to Henan and really add a little home advantage for the first time this year.
Even with the fans, Henan would be looking forward to the game after a strong performance in the first part of the season. At the moment, they stand in third place after losing just once in the opening ten games. They are the second highest scorers in the league and ended the last stage with a six goal thrashing of Changchun. With striker Fernando Karanga looking good and combining well with Henrique Dourado, Henan have enough to cause problem for any defence.
Beijing had an up and down first stage, starting reasonably well before winning just one of the last five games to end in fifth, The team relies a little too much on forward Zhang Yuning who scored six goals in nine games. Zhang did pick up a knock late in the stage but should be fit to start and is needed, Defender Liang Shaowen is missing as he was in action with the national team and is still in isolation.
All in all, the game would usually look to be quite an even affair but the involvement of the fans should not be underestimated.
