FC Copenhagen v AC Horsens
🏟
Sunday 17th July – 3:00PM KO
Last season’s Danish Superliga champions from FC Copenhagen start the season off in what should be a manageable game against newly promoted AC Horsens. However, despite bringing home the title last season, Copenhagen has plenty of issues, and this match could be a little closer than the home fans expect.
Copenhagen’s transfer window has been relatively quiet, but they have managed to keep the championship-winning core from last season, and hope to qualify for the Champions League. To keep the core together, they made two significant signings in Denis Vavro from Lazio, a new record signing, who played on loan at the club last season, and Swedish international Victor Claesson, who joins permanently after playing on a suspended Russian contract last season.
AC Horsens won the 1st division last season and earned promotion to the Superliga. They do look like one of the weaker promoted teams in recent years though and are expected to struggle this season. They’ll need time to adjust to the pace of the top flight, and the squad lacks true difference makers. This is especially the case offensively.
Both teams are without injuries. Copenhagen is without reserves Luther Singh and Marios Oikonomou though.
Copenhagen had by far the best defense in the Superliga last season, and by keeping Vavro on the books, this should continue. I expect them to keep a clean sheet at home against a weak Horsens offense, and win to zero just like they have done in three of their last four meetings with the team from the center of Jutland. My pick for the game is a Copenhagen win and under 3.5 goals at odds 1.85 at Betfair Sportsbook.

Brøndby v AGF
🏟
Sunday 17th July – 5:00PM KO
This week’s Superliga highlight is played at Brøndby Stadion between Brøndby IF and rivals AGF. It’s a fixture between two sides who struggled last season and are expecting things to improve this season. However, looking at the squads, it remains doubtful if that will actually happen.
The hosts won the league for the first time in 16 years in 2021, but last season was a failure as the yellow-blues finished fourth, and had to settle for the Conference League. Offensively, Brøndby struggled to create chances, they were 7th in chances created and 8th in xG last season, and defensively they created a high number of unnecessary personal mistakes.
Most fans expected a busy summer with new signings to improve the squad, but so far everything has been silent around the club. Despite the obvious needs at both ends of the field, right back Sebastian Sebulonsen remains the only signing so far. And with him joining the club on Thursday, it is unlikely that he plays a role in the opening match.
Last season was even worse for AGF. They finished dead last in xG and chances created, and they have lost two of their best offensive players in Mustapha Bundu and Jon Dagur Torsteinsson. German Uwe Rösler is the new head coach, and he is expected to bring the club back to the top. Rösler is an experienced coach with a past at several big clubs in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, and he looks like a steal for AGF.
The White-Blues lost Jack Wilshere after his short stint in Aarhus, but they have signed Norwegian striker Sigurd Haugen. He joins AGF after scoring 28 goals for Aalesund in the last season and a half, and looks like a great addition to the team.
On the team news front, Brøndby are without captain and central defender Andreas Maxsø. Furthermore, right back Andreas Bruus might be rested as he is closing in on a transfer to a French club. AGF should have everybody ready.
Both teams performed poorly offensively last season, and despite the addition of Haugen at AGF, I expect a low-scoring match. Both teams have performed poorly in the preseason games, and I’m counting on both sides to start the season with a cautious approach. I’m therefore going with under 2.5 goals at odds 1.82 from Betfair Sportsbook.
