The six-year-old Martaline gelding is a perfect two from two over fences and lines up in the Grade 1 novice chase at 1.40. He could hardly have been any more impressive when winning in this class at Fairyhouse last time, slamming a subsequent Grade 1 winner by four-and-a-half lengths.

The Grade 1 Irish Champion Hurdle is a fascinating renewal, featuring a pair of highly progressive Willie Mullins hurdlers, taking on the reigning champion, Honeysuckle. Henry De Bromhead’s star mare has won this race the for the last three seasons but has questions to answer after a poor reappearance effort. VAUBAN finished behind State Man first-time-out here in December. The Ricci-owned and three-time Grade 1 winner is entitled to come on for that run and rates the value play in the race.

One of the talk horses of the season, Gaelic Warrior, will no doubt have an army of supporters in the handicap hurdle at 4.10. He could easily prove to be a Graded horse in handicap company, after a facile 15-length Clonmel victory. A rise of 9lb could seriously underestimate him but one who rates better value is the Charles Byrne-trained ALL THOSE YEARS. He raced keenly over 2m4f first-up at Cork, suggesting he’ll come on for that, dropping to this distance. A stongly run two miles looks likely to suit and it would be no surprise to see him involved at the business end, with Paddy Power offering eight places.
