After their dismal showing during the World Cup qualifying matches, Sweden were given a lifeline through the play-offs, which they took full advantage of. Graham Potter’s men have been placed in Group F alongside Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia, in what promises to be one of the most evenly-contested groups of the competition.

🌍 How did Sweden qualify for the 2026 World Cup?
Sweden's route to the 2026 World Cup was incredibly turbulent, as they finished rock bottom of Group B with a record of two draws and four losses from their six games. That came as a complete surprise, given how dominant they were in the Nations League. However, those performances weren’t forgotten, as they earned Sweden a play-off spot as one of the highest-ranked sides from the Nations League.
Sweden breezed past Ukraine in the play-off semi-final, as Gyokeres bagged himself a hat-trick. The final was a lot more competitive, and it looked like it was about to go to extra time, but the Arsenal man popped up again to find the back of the net in a 3-2 win over Poland.
👔 Who is the Sweden manager at the 2026 World Cup?
Graham Potter took charge of Sweden for the play-offs, having previously been the manager of West Ham, Chelsea and Brighton. He was dismissed at West Ham after a poor start to the 25/26 season, before taking on the Sweden job after a brief hiatus.
Potter likes his side to play fluid football. He was able to get Sweden looking back to their free-flowing best in the final 3rd during the play-off matches, so he will hope for something similar across the pond.
🔎 Who are Sweden's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?
Viktor Gyokeres
After scoring 52 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions in 2024/25, Gyokeres hasn’t quite hit those same heights this campaign, but a return of 21 goals in his first season for Arsenal is still impressive. The Arsenal man scored four goals in two play-off games to get them here, and nine goals in six in their last Nations League campaign.
Yasin Ayari
Sweden are not short of talent operating amongst the top sides, and Yasin Ayari looks set for a big role in midfield. The 22-year-old has four goals and three assists for Brighton this season, and he has been excellent when it comes to dictating play and controlling possession. Ayari also chipped in with a goal and two assists during Sweden’s qualifying matches, and he will expect to have a decent influence in the final third this summer.
Victor Lindelof
Victor Lindelof helped Aston Villa secure their first major trophy in 37 years, as he started in the Europa League final. He was deployed in a slightly unfamiliar position, in defensive midfield, but he still put in an excellent performance. Lindelof is the Sweden captain, and his experience and versatility will be crucial at the World Cup. He is expected to feature in a back three, and will be relied upon as a leader.
