Mohammed Kudus to have 1+ Shots on Target

Mohammed Kudus is going to be a serious player for Tottenham. He showcased his talent in Tottenham’s Super Cup defeat to PSG on penalties, but Kudus can keep his head held high with his performance in the game. Kudus caused Nuno Mendes, one of the best left backs in the world, all sorts of issues and had one shot in the game, as well as creating three chances.

He played as part of a front two for Tottenham in the Super Cup which is a role that would aid our selection should he line up alongside Richarlison again here. Kudus averaged 0.76 shots on target per 90 in the Premier League last season, but we can expect that to increase here up against a Burnley side that will sit quite deep for the majority of this encounter.

Tottenham to Win

I was really impressed with Tottenham overall in their 2-2 draw with PSG in the Super Cup. Yes, it was very Spursy to let a two goal lead slip in the final five minutes, but for the majority of the game, Tottenham were organised and committed - traits you wouldn’t have associated with them based on their performances last season. Frank has managed to get his ideas across in a very short space of time, and even a pinch of their performance in the Super Cup should be enough to see off a newly promoted Burnley side who are odds on to go straight back down this season.

Cristian Romero to Commit 1+ Fouls

Romero is Tottenham’s new captain, but in truth I'm not sure how long he’ll last in the role. He’s a senior player but rarely acts like one as his track record of petulance and reckless challenges would suggest. Romero’s foul rate could even increase this season as he’s playing in a back three, opening the door for more 1v1 duels - especially against sides like Burnley who will mainly play on the counter attack against Tottenham. Romero averaged 0.89 fouls committed per 90 in the Premier League last season.

Spurs Show Promise Despite PSG Loss

Tottenham shouldn’t be too deflated with their Super Cup defeat on penalties to PSG, especially as most people had written them off before a ball was kicked anyway. Thomas Frank’s side put in the perfect performance for 85 minutes, but collapsed right at the end as PSG showed why they won the Champions League so convincingly last season.

A few things really stood out to me from that Super Cup final, mainly the shape Tottenham lined up in and their potential threat from set pieces this season. Both of Tottenham’s goals came from set pieces in the Super Cup final. I could never wrap my head around why Ange Postecoglu didn’t take corners and set pieces more seriously, only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool had more corners than Tottenham last season but the Lilywhites rarely made the most of these situations which is surprising when considering the delivery of Pedro Porro and the aerial threats of Bentancur, Romero and Van de Ven - who all had shots from set pieces in the Super Cup final.

Thomas Frank will make more of these set-piece situations, as we saw during his time at Brentford, with his methods already having an impact on Tottenham converting chances from set pieces. The 3-5-2 shape was also interesting. I’m not sure Frank will opt for this shape against Burnley as it is a bit negative, but it could prove invaluable in some of the games against Tottenham’s big six rivals. Keep an eye on Djed Spence in the wingback role if Frank does go with this shape. There aren’t many players in the league that can match his raw speed.

🟣 Burnley Defence First Test

Burnley are slightly unique in the sense that they come into the Premier League with one of the best defensive records across all four divisions last season - no side conceded fewer goals than Scott Parker’s Burnley across the professional divisions of English football last term (16).

Strangely, this could flip on its head this season with the quality that Parker and his side will have to manage this campaign. They’ve been ok in pre-season with narrow defeats against Stoke and Lazio in their final two warm-up games before the season kicks off. My concern for Burnley is I’m not sure where the goals will come from, even if they are able to remain defensively solid - without an outlet at the other end of the pitch, they’ll be resigned to being under constant pressure, especially against sides with the quality that Tottenham possess.

Some of their signings are eye-catching, with Kyle Walker recently being joined by Chelsea duo Lesley Ugochukwu and Armando Broja for a combined fee of £40 million. I don’t think Burnley’s summer spending is enough at this stage to suggest that they can stay up in the Premier League this season, but an out-and-out goalscorer may change that opinion if they can bring one in before the window shuts.

📊 Tottenham v Burnley H2H

The most recent head-to-head meeting between these sides was back in May 2024, with Tottenham running out 2-1 winners at home. Tottenham also won the clash between the sides at Turf Moor that season (5-2).
