Wolves welcome Newcastle with Rob Edwards hoping that his side can extend their recent positive run of form as they attempt to escape from a near impossible situation at the bottom of the Premier League.

Newcastle edged through their FA Cup tie against Bournemouth on penalties last weekend, but fell to a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi final clash against Manchester City.

📈 Wolves v Newcastle Form & Tactics

Wolves’ recent upturn in form has been admirable and Rob Edwards does deserve credit for imposing his style on the side and making the Wanderers a tougher challenge than they were in the early parts of the season. There’s a notable organisation about Wolves which wasn’t present under Vitor Pereira in the early months, which has allowed Wolves to stay in games.

Wolves have avoided defeat across their last four matches in all competitions, their best run of form so far this season. This run has included victories over Shrewsbury and West Ham, as well as important away draws against the likes of Manchester United and Everton. Wolves can definitely pose problems to Newcastle here, especially when looking over how poor Newcastle’s away form has been in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle have only won two of their 10 away matches in the Premier League this term and it’s starting to turn into a bit of a pattern under Eddie Howe. Newcastle were poor on the road for large parts of last season as well, with the Magpies often relying on their form at St James’ Park to carry them through a season.

Newcastle’s recent form has been pretty positive aside from that defeat against Manchester City, where the Magpies did look a little flat and fatigued. The next few weeks for Newcastle look really tough as well, they take on PSV, Aston Villa, PSG, Liverpool and Manchester City across their next five matches so this could be a really challenging spell for Eddie Howe who may start to come under a bit of pressure.

📔 Wolves v Newcastle Formation & Team News

Wolves have been lining up in a 3-5-2 across the last few weeks, with the main catalyst for their upturn in form being the roles of Mateus Mane and Jhon Arias. Rob Edwards has dropped both players slightly back and partnered them with Joao Gomes in the middle of the park - forming an incredibly effective midfield trio.

Both Arias and Mane have excelled in this role which allows them to get forward, but also allows Wolves to make the most of the positive traits that both players show when without the ball. Arias in particular made a really poor start to his Wolves career as a forward under Vitor Pereira but has improved massively in this role, and may be generously priced for foul involvements if the market hasn’t taken into account his position change.

Newcastle will line up in a 4-3-3 shape and the challenge for Eddie Howe at the moment is finding a way for his team to be expressive, while not sacrificing control in games. Newcastle have struggled to find this balance in recent games with 2+ goals conceded in each of their last three matches. If the Magpies sit too deep, then you get a performance like the one that Newcastle put in against Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear Derby where they failed to carry an appropriate attacking threat.

Lewis Miley is expected to continue at right back here, which may end up being an area of the pitch that Wolves look to target. Lewis Hall on the opposite side of the pitch has been really impressive since returning from injury - particularly his ability to carry the ball, he’s completed 21 successful dribbles across his 10 Premier League appearances this term (2.01 per 90).

📊 Wolves v Newcastle Key Stats

  • Wolves have avoided defeat in three consecutive Premier League matches for the first time this season.

  • Newcastle have only won two of their 10 away matches in the Premier League this season.

  • Mateus Mane has scored in each of his last two Premier League starts.

  • Newcastle won the initial league meeting between the sides, coming away 1-0 winners.
