One of the most content fanbases in the Championship faces off against one of the most discontented.

Wrexham have a much greater chance of finishing inside the top six than Leicester City, a fact that would’ve seemed remarkable in pre-season. Marti Cifuentes is the manager under a huge amount of pressure so he would dearly love a big win here for the Foxes.

📈 Wrexham v Leicester Form & Tactics

Wrexham will be rueing their inability to take their chances last time out as they have lost some momentum in the play-off chase in the Championship. They lost 1-2 at home to Norwich, which brought to an end a four game winning streak in the league, plus an FA Cup progression against Premier League Nottm Forest. Nonetheless, this will be Wrexham’s third game in a row at Rae Cas, so they will certainly be feeling right at home, and given their home stats, should be feeling pretty confident in their chances.

Before that weekend defeat, Wrexham were 10 league matches unbeaten at home. Their overall xG differential is +0.35 xG, which means that they are creating more chances than their opponents to the tune of around a third of a goal more than their visitors. They have won the xG battle in each of their last five matches as well.

FA Cup progression away at Cheltenham is about the only positive for Marti Cifuentes to cling onto in terms of Leicester’s away form recently. They have not won away from home in the Championship since 6th December at Derby, and although they have beaten Derby (again) and West Brom at home in recent weeks, the pressure is still on to try and rise through the table.

There is very little in the performance data to back this idea up though. Leicester are running at a -0.31 xG differential across the league season as a whole, and they have actually been worse over their last ten league games with a -0.4 xG differential over that sample size. They are only getting around 10 shots off per match, conceding 14, so there is clearly an issue in general play that needs to be solved soon.

📔 Wrexham v Leicester Formation & Team News

It will be a battle in the #9 position of Wrexham’s 3-4-2-1 as Sam Smith has really taken advantage of Kieffer Moore’s injury absence. Smith has been averaging around four shots per 90, and has been scoring goals as well. However, there may be some rotation from Saturday with Moore potentially coming back in. There are options elsewhere as well, Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead are the most likely pairing to start in behind, but Ollie Rathbone is almost demanding a start with his own form. Max Cleworth has just signed a new long term deal and will be keen to continue his ever-present run in defence.

Leicester are likely to stick to their usual 4-2-3-1, but given how the season is going I am sure that some people are advocating a change. Cifuentes is not usually a manager to make those types of changes though, so I am confident in that shape. Their squad does look to have depth and quality in those positions, but it just hasn’t worked so far.

Abdul Fatawu and Stephy Mavididi are the dual wide threat, but Jordan James is being allowed a lot of freedom in the #10 role. There are no new injury concerns for Cifuentes after the weekend.
