It’s difficult to pick a winner between the two sides, which is reflected in the match odds prices - Spurs have the upper hand considering they play at home, but it’s Dortmund who come into this clash in better form. The Black and Yellows were able to snatch the three points against St Pauli last time out, as Emre Can converted from the penalty spot in the 95th minute. The Christmas break has served Dortmund well, and they have scored exactly three goals in all three matches since their return to action. 

Nico Kovac's men have also been an entertaining side to watch in the Champions League this season, averaging 5.33 goals per game, which is the highest of any team. There have been at least four goals in all six of their European outings this season, with BTTS landing in five of those matches.

Spurs haven’t quite been as enterprising, but they have seen BTTS land in six of their last eight home matches. Thomas Frank’s men have struggled to exert as much control on games as they would have liked this season, and because of that, they have picked up more cards than any other Premier League side this campaign. 

The North Londoners have been shown 60 yellow cards and three reds after just 22 Premier League matches this season, averaging 2.8 cards per game. Jarred Gillett dished out five yellow cards to Spurs last time out, as they lost 2-1 at home to West Ham. 

That average drops to 2.0 cards per game in the Champions League, but Tottenham have still landed this selection in four of their six matches overall. They face a tough matchup against a technical Dortmund side on Tuesday night, who drew two yellow cards against Man City in their last Champions League away day.

Cristian Romero has been shown nine yellow cards and one red this season, but somehow none of those have come in the Champions League. Micky van de Ven is suspended for this clash, which puts a greater responsibility on the shoulders of the Argentina international. Romero is averaging 1.3 fouls per 90 in the Champions League, and has committed five infringements in his last three European starts.

He draws an excellent matchup on Tuesday night to keep that streak going against the Dortmund attackers. Serhou Guirassy is averaging 1.55 fouls drawn per 90 across all competitions and should be directly up against van de Ven. Karim Adeyemi has featured regularly in the Champions League for Dortmund this season, and the German international is averaging 2.8 fouls drawn per 90 this term. Josko Gvardiol racked up five fouls when playing at centre back against Dortmund earlier in the Champions League season.

Max Beier has been an underrated option for Niko Kovac this season, and has primarily been used off the bench. However, the 23-year-old has started twice since the Christmas break ended, and could reclaim his starting spot in the XI in midweek. 

Beier registered three shots against Werder Bremen last week, hitting the target twice before being replaced after 70 minutes. Prior to that, Beier had more success and took just 10 minutes to find the back of the net. He had two efforts in that game. The German international has been a real livewire when he does play, and is averaging 2.33 shots per 90 across all competitions this season. 

He has a total of five goals under his belt this term, with two of those coming in his last four appearances alone.

Archie Gray is also partially responsible for Tottenham’s poor disciplinary record, as he has picked up five yellow cards in his last nine starts. Interestingly, he has only committed five fouls in that time, highlighting how the vast majority of his infringements tend to be quite cynical, enough to earn him an instant card. 

Operating in a defensive midfield role, the 19-year-old does often find himself caught out of position, which doesn’t bode well for him against a side like Dortmund, who can be dangerous in transition. Gray’s game time was limited at the start of the season, but his minutes have been trending upwards in recent weeks as he grows in confidence.

Glenn Nyberg is at the whistle for this clash - he is one of the more lenient Champions League referees, but did show six yellow cards in the game between Newcastle and Barcelona, so he can be no-nonsense at times. 

Julian Ryerson had a relatively quiet game for Dortmund at the weekend, but he has been in solid form since the new year. He registered an assist against both Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach, respectively, taking his tally to seven assists for the season. 

Operating as a right wing back, Ryerson is afforded plenty of attacking freedom to bomb down the flank, often looking to send crosses into the box. The Norwegian international is the primary set piece taker for the Black and Yellows, which is a bonus against a side like Spurs. 

Tottenham have looked vulnerable defensively this season, and have conceded seven goals in their last three games alone. Ryerson provided the assist for Dortmund’s only goal against Man City in their last European outing, meaning he has landed this selection in five out of nine away starts this season across all competitions.

Xavi Simons will face a familiar opponent on Tuesday night - the Dutchman spent two seasons’ in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, and faced Dortmund three times in that period. Simons will have fond memories of this opponent, given how he provided a goal and assist when he last played against them back in March. 

After receiving a straight red card against Liverpool, Simons recently made his way back into the first team picture for Spurs, hoping to pick up where he left off. He had scored in back-to-back matches just prior to his sending off, and was finally beginning to find his feet. 

However, he has drawn eight fouls in his three starts since returning, playing the full 90 in all of those matches. Simons is averaging 2.34 fouls drawn per 90 this season, and is expected to play a big role in the upcoming weeks with Mohammed Kudus out injured.
