Having topped Group E ahead of Belgium, the Romanians have already exceeded expectations, though they will be determined to prolong their adventure in Germany by securing a berth in the quarter-finals at a European Championship for the first time since 2000.
For Ronald Koeman’s Oranje, improvement is the name of the game and the pressure is on the Netherlands to crank up their performance levels after they secured qualification from Group D by the skin of their teeth in third spot.
Romania v Netherlands Best Bets
Romania failed to score in just one of their three Group E matches and though they were unable to register on matchday two against Belgium, they did clock 14 shots in their defeat, five of which hit the target with four of those efforts drawing saves from Koen Casteels.
The Romanians are slick enough in the attacking third to manufacture opportunities to strike against a Netherlands defence that was exposed by Austria (2-3) last week, though they are unlikely to keep the Oranje out at the opposite end.
Romania conceded 1.70 in xGA (expected goals against) when they faced Belgium on June 22 and in the Netherlands, they face a team of comparable quality in Munich. The Dutch lodged an xGF of 1.70 against Austria last time out and they scored twice in two of their three group assignments.
Cody Gakpo could lead the charge in that direction and the Liverpool star is an attractive prospect at 1.44 to notch at least one shot on target against Romania. Gakpo hit at least one shot on target in each of his three group stage starts and as the Netherlands’ leading marksman at Euro 2024, he should have the confidence to let fly again.
Romania’s Marius Marin is another eye-catching individual market candidate and is backable at 1.57 to commit over 1.5 fouls. The 25-year-old has been fouling at a rate of 1.50 times per 90 in Germany, though his tally of three fouls and seven attempted tackles against Belgium feels significant ahead of an appearance against the Netherlands.
With the Dutch likely to set the tempo, Marin should have another busy outing in midfield, so expect his tackle and foul count to be high again.

📊 Romania Form and Stats
Romania sit a full 40 places below the Netherlands in the current FIFA Rankings, however, any notions of an inferiority complex should be dismissed when Iordănescu’s competitive Tricolorii take to the field in Munich.
A superb 3-0 win over a much-fancied Ukraine outfit on matchday one in Group E put Romania firmly on course for knockout round qualification and their 1-1 draw with Slovakia on matchday three sealed the deal, leaving their 2-0 loss to Belgium in between as an after-thought.
Interestingly, of the 16 teams that secured passage from the group stage, only Georgia conceded more shots (71) than Romania (46), however, a more detailed look under the hood shows that the Romanian defence performed more solidly than that figure would suggest.
Indeed, the average xG per shot faced by Romania in the group phase was 0.07, and only Belgium (0.06) and England (0.04) fared better in that regard, which suggests Iordănescu’s well-marshalled troops are adept at keeping opponents at arm’s length.
Romania’s regular back four could be unsettled by the absence of suspended left-back Nicusor Bancu against the Netherlands however, with right-footer Deian Sorescu expected to replace him.
The Romanian backline has been offered plenty of protection from Marian Marin with the screening midfielder averaging 2.70 tackles and 1.30 fouls per game at Euro 2024 so far. The 25-year-old committed three fouls against Belgium on matchday two in Group E and a similar tally is anticipated against the Dutch.
Further forward, Razvan Marin (two goals, 2.00 shots per game) and Nicolae Stanciu (one goal, 1.3 shots per game) have carried the most threat, though centre-forward Denis Dragus have offered plenty of endeavour and his efforts to unsettle opposing defenders have produced 2.30 fouls per game.
Romania’s high work rate has been a key characteristic of their performances, though reports have suggested that Iordănescu put his players through an intense training session on Saturday in preparation for their stiff challenge against the Oranje, so it will be interesting to see if that impacts energy levels.
📊 Netherlands Form and Stats
Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk made a frank suggestion after the Netherlands’ 3-2 reverse to Austria when he said “maybe we overestimate ourselves” and the Oranje certainly fell short of expectations in the group stage.
Finishing third in Group D behind the Austrians and France, the Netherlands entered the knockout rounds through the back door having led for just 12 minutes and 27 seconds across their three group fixtures.
No other qualifying side had fewer minutes in the ascendency, though Ronald Koeman’s charges did win the xGF battle in two of their three Group D assignment, including their five-goal thriller defeat to Austria (1.70 – 0.90).
To their credit, the Dutch also gave as good as they got against France (0-0) on matchday two, though they needed a late intervention from super-sub Wout Weghorst to beat Poland in their Euro 2024 opener having found the target with just four of their 21 efforts against the Poles.
Indeed, the Netherlands have hit the target with just 25% (10) of the 40 attempts they’ve mustered in Germany so far, though two-goal Cody Gakpo has bucked the trend there, posting an impressive 57.1% (four) accuracy rate from his seven shots in the group stage.
In the Oranje’s only defeat at Euro 2024 so far, they were physically out-matched by an aggressive Austrian side, who out-tackled their Dutch opponents by 23-18 and out-fouled them by 16-10.
In midfield, it’s fair to say that the likes of Tijjani Reijnders, Jerdy Schouten, Joey Veerman enjoy the more technical aspects of the game over the nitty gritty stuff, though the Netherlands have been a little meek across the pitch in general. Their haul of just two yellow cards is the lowest haul of bookings at the tournament.
⚔️ Romania v Netherlands Head-to-Head
Tuesday’s clash will be just the second counter at a major tournament between Romania and Netherlands. The nations last met in that setting back in the group stage of Euro 2008, when goals from Klass Jan Huntelaar and Robin van Persie landed a 2-0 win for the Dutch.
In total, Romania and the Netherlands have crossed paths 14 times before, and the Oranje have tasted defeat in this fixture just once. That solitary 1-0 reverse came in a 2007 Euros qualification test in Bucharest.
The last tussle between Romania and the Netherlands took place in a friendly fixture in November 2017. On that occasion, the Oranje roared to a comfortable 30 in Bucharest with Memphis Depay, Ryan Babel, and Luuk de Jong on the scoresheet.
The aggregate score from all previous 14 encounters is seriously one-sided and reads 29-3 in the Netherlands’ favour.
