PSV surprisingly dropped points in their opening game of the season against Fortuna Sittard, but the underlying numbers from that game paint a slightly different story.

PSV are clearly the best side in the Eredivisie, they won the league with ease last year and registered an xG of 2.56 in their 2-2 draw with Fortuna Sittard, with their opponents scoring twice from an xG of just 0.98 and 24% possession.

PSV came away 5-1 winners when these sides last met, and have actually beaten Excelsior in each of the last 14 head to head meetings between the sides - stretching all the way back to 2016.

Excelsior finished just six points ahead of the drop zone last season, notably winning just five of their 17 home games - the second worst home record in the division.
