Real Madrid to Win

I’m backing Real to take all three points in this clash, despite their recent struggles at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The derby simply couldn’t have come at a better time for Xabi Alonso’s men, who have won all seven of their matches so far this season, by and large, in impressive style. They thrashed Levante 4-1 last time out, and with Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior in flying form, confidence will be sky-high.

Their rivals, by contrast, have mustered just two wins so far and have found themselves repeatedly starved of opportunities. Against Liverpool, the only side they’ve met of a comparable calibre, Atletico created just 0.61 xGF, and allowed 2.72 xGA at the other end.

Atletico Madrid to Receive the Most Cards

So far this season, only two teams have collected cards at a lower rate than Real Madrid, who are averaging just 1.67 per 90; meanwhile, Atletico rank 9th with 2.17. This reflects a continuation of what we saw over their last campaign, where they averaged 1.71 - fewer than any other side in La Liga.

Additionally, the rate at which Real Madrid’s opponents were awarded cards was significantly higher than their city rivals' (2.5-1.8). Only Espanyol’s opposition accumulated fewer cards than that of Atletico over the entirety of the campaign.

Over the last six derbies in La Liga, this bet has landed in all but one, with Atletico seeing themselves reduced to 10 men in three of those. The card tallies over the last three reads 11 for Atletico, two for Real Madrid.

The Madrid derby rarely needs extra spice, but this one feels especially intriguing. The hosts have got the better of their opponents at home in recent years, but Real arrive in perfect form and brimming with confidence.

  • Real Madrid have won all seven of their matches this season, scoring 13 and conceding just three.

  • Atletico sit 8th with just nine points from six games, and have scored only nine goals.

  • Atletico have seen red in three of the last six Madrid derbies.

Los Blancos Flying Under Alonso

Real Madrid’s comfortable 4-1 victory over Levante on Tuesday extended their flawless start to seven across all competitions, and despite Xabi Alonso trying to impose a sense of realism onto fans and players alike, it’s easy to see why some are getting carried away.

Real have conceded just three goals so far, and having hit back with 13 already, it’s no surprise to see them storming into an early lead in Spain’s top-flight.

They generated just shy of 4 xG against Levante, with Mbappe accounting for 1.76 of that, and bagging a brace for himself. Vinicius Junior also shone, recording a goal and an assist, as well as winning a match-high 11 duels, and drawing six fouls.

If Real’s form is anything to go by, they should breeze past Atletico, though as derbies so often remind us, rivalries have a habit of defying logic.

🔴 Chance-Starved Attack Leaves Atletico Playing Catch-Up

There’s no escaping the fact that it’s been a dire start to the season for Atletico, who sit in 8th spot with just nine points from their opening six games.

You won’t be surprised to learn that it’s typically been their attack letting them down; they’ve bagged only nine times this season - less than half of Barcelona’s total, who lead La Liga in that respect.

Atletico’s chance creation has also been poor, though they seem to have turned a corner against Rayo Vallecano, where they created 3.61 xG.

Still, they required a Julian Alvarez hat-trick, including two goals after the 80th minute, to seal their exhilarating 3-2 comeback win.

📊 Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid H2H

Fans have been treated to a series of real contests between these sides in recent years, the most recent of which was their clash in last season’s Champions League. As you may remember, Atletico sealed a 1-0 victory at home to take it to penalties, only to be knocked out in controversial fashion, as Alvarez’s penalty was disallowed for a double-touch.

Looking a bit further back, there’s been little to separate the Madrid giants, with each of their last three in the league ending 1-1. Interestingly, however, it’s Atletico who hold a significant advantage when considering only their clashes at home, where they’ve avoided defeat in 15 of the last 18 showings. In the last four at the Metropolitano, the hosts won three and drew the other.
