Australia find themselves in Group D for the 2026 World Cup alongside USA, Paraguay, and Turkey, and it’s difficult to pick a clear winner.

The Socceroos have qualified for each of the last five editions of the World Cup, making it only as far as the round of 16, but they will hope to make it further in the competition this summer.

🌍 How did Australia qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

Australia comfortably topped their AFC qualification group alongside Palestine, Lebanon, and Bangladesh to progress to the next round, but they had a lot more difficulties in the next stage.

Australia started off with a defeat against Bahrain, before drawing against Indonesia. They were able to recover after that, though, winning five of their next eight matches to finish above Saudi Arabia and qualify for the World Cup.

Australia finished second in the group, behind Japan, although they did take four points off them during the group stages. Australia were a bit inconsistent, but were grateful in the end to get the job done.

👔 Who is the Australia manager at the World Cup 2026?

After that 0-0 draw against Indonesia, Graham Arnold stepped down as manager, and he was replaced at the helm by Tony Popovic.

The new manager has typically gone with a 3-4-3 formation, which has resulted in a bit more defensive resilience, at the expense of an entertaining brand of football.

However, it has provided better results, and Australia owe a lot of credit to their new manager for qualifying for the World Cup.

🔎 Who are Australia's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Jackson Irvine

Jackson Irvine was a notable absentee from the Australia squad in March, but the St Pauli man is expected to play a big role at the World Cup again, just as he did in Qatar in 2022.

Irvine has struggled with injury this season, but he is a key player in midfield, and he featured in 14 of Australia’s 16 matches during the qualifiers. He scored three goals in that time and also contributed one assist.

Harry Souttar

Harry Souttar was another player left out of the squad in March, as he continues to build his fitness up at Leicester City. The centre back didn’t play a game in the entirety of 2025 after suffering an Achilles tendon injury, but his physical presence at the back will be important for the Socceroos, especially in a back three.

Souttar is also a massive threat from set-pieces, standing at 6’5, and he scored twice during Australia’s qualifying games.

Jordan Bos

Jordan Bos registered a goal and an assist in Australia’s most recent game against Curacao, despite only featuring off the bench in that one. He plays for Feyenoord as a left back at a domestic level, but is given more attacking freedom as a wingback for the Australia national side.

The 23-year-old has recorded three goals and nine assists in 31 appearances for Feyenoord across all competitions this season, which are impressive numbers for a fullback.

In short, no.

Australia have little to no chance of winning the World Cup this summer.

While they have been a familiar face in the tournament in recent years, they have shown few signs of being a team that can go further than the first knockout phase.

Australia are in Group D with the USA, Turkey, and Paraguay.
