📈 Benfica v Real Madrid Form & Tactics

Benfica shouldn’t be underestimated in this clash, Jose Mourinho is still a formidable operator in these environments - as he and his side showed on the final day of the league phase, as they beat Real Madrid 4-2 to set up this encounter. Benfica do have some very talented players, and are notably tough to beat at home with no defeats from their 11 home matches in Liga Portugal this term.

Benfica fully deserved their 4-2 win over Real Madrid a few weeks ago, they racked up 22 shots, 12 of which found the target, resulting in an xG of 3.01. This metric is slightly inflated from what it usually would be, as the situation demanded Benfica to win by at least two goals to secure their spot in the top 24 of the league phase. I anticipate that Mourinho will be a bit more pragmatic in his approach this time around, knowing that this tie is contested over 180 minutes.

The contrast in experience between the two dugouts is quite fascinating here, Alvaro Arbeloa hasn’t taken charge of a knockout tie in the Champions League before - and the only other experience he has of knockout football was in the Copa Del Rey, where Real Madrid embarrassingly crashed out of the competition to Albacete.

Real Madrid still look like a side that could collapse at any given moment, the attacking talent they have always makes them a serious threat at this level, but aside from that, this team doesn’t have much structure or a clear way of playing, which is where Benfica can look to earn a slight advantage over Arbeloa’s side.

📔 Benfica v Real Madrid Formation & Team News

Jose Mourinho is likely to employ his usual tactics for knockout football as an experienced campaigner who has navigated many ties like this before successfully. I’d expect Benfica to line up in a 4-4-2 when without the ball, with the idea being to frustrate and deny space to Real Madrid, who we can expect to have the ball - they had 67% of the ball in the meeting between the sides just two weeks ago.

Possession shouldn’t affect Benfica’s attacking output too much in this game; they had 22 shots from just 33% of the ball in the recent meeting. What is particularly interesting about these efforts is how many came within the penalty box. 20 of Benfica’s 22 shots came from inside the area, telling us that Mourinho’s side constantly found a way to generate high-quality chances against Real Madrid, an issue that Los Blancos have been dealing with all season.

Real Madrid will line up in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 shape and rely on the effectiveness of individual talent, rather than a coherent tactical system. Arbeloa looks a little out of his depth in my view, and the results he’s earned have been down to the effectiveness of players like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham rather than his own tactical nous. It takes a lot for these Real Madrid players to respect a coach, and it doesn’t look like Arbeloa has fully earned that from this crop of players.

Jude Bellingham will be out for this clash through injury, with Real also expected to be missing Raul Ascenio, Eder Militao and Rodrygo. Arbeloa may be a bit more conservative in his approach this time around. He went with two attacking midfielders in the 4-2 defeat a few weeks ago, which ended up being a bit of a naive decision.
