📈 Real Madrid v Benfica Form & Tactics
The hosts come into this game off the back of a surprising 2-1 defeat away at Osasuna, a game in which they dominated possession but weren’t able to create many clear-cut chances and were punished by a late Raul Garcia winner.
Before that, they had won five league matches on the spin, scoring 2+ goals in all five of those, after returning from losing the Supercopa final to Barcelona 3-2 in the Middle East in mid January. It’s the talismanic Brazilian Vinicius Jr that has been in the most inspired form for new coach Alvaro Arbeloa, with the wide forward having netted in all four of his most recent starts, including the winner in the first leg in Portugal and a brace in a hammering of Real Sociedad.
Kylian Mbappe has also shown fine form since the turn of the year, with a run of three successive braces in late January being the highlight, although he has failed to score in his last two and will surely be keen to put that right here.
For Benfica, it’s five wins in their last six domestic league games, with a 0-0 away at Tondela the only recent blot in their copybook. Their goals have tended to be more spread around of late, with three of their regular front four (Pavlidis, Silva, and Andreas Schjelderup) all having found the net in the last four matches.
Pavlidis has hit 20 league goals already, added to his three in this competition, and will be itching to add to that tally in a bid to complete a famous comeback in this tie.
📔 Real Madrid v Benfica Formation & Team News
The key absences mainly lie with the hosts heading into this clash. For Real, Rodrygo was due to miss out anyway due to an accumulation of cards, but looks to be sidelined with injury anyway, and he’s joined in the treatment room by key defender Eder Militao, midfielder Dani Ceballos, and star attacking midfielder Jude Bellingham.
Centre back Dean Huijsen is also a potential doubt for this clash, but may be risked ahead of David Alaba or Raul Asencio. Arbeloa has employed a version of a 4-4-2 in his tenure so far, with Vinicius becoming more of a strike partner to Mbappe than a traditional winger and the four midfielders shifting between a flat quartet and more of a diamond shape.
Meanwhile, the biggest miss for the visitors will be manager Jose Mourinho, who returns to the Bernabeu only to be forced to watch from the stands after being shown a red card in the first leg. Of the playing staff, just Samuel Soares and Joao Veloso are the possible missing squad members, so expect the usual 4-2-3-1 shape, with a strong chance that Sidny Lopes Cabral or Dodi Lukebakio comes in for Gianluca Prestianni on the right wing.
