By the time Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday clash on Sunday they will know exactly what is required of them. Sheffield Wednesday will still be in the bottom three come kick-off, indeed, they will still be 23rd, but they will know what a win or draw would do for them.
For Blackburn, the unexpected three point haul at Leeds last weekend was a huge tonic, and has taken the pressure off this game to an extent. From being a must-win, or at least a ‘must-not-lose’, to now being a game in which even a loss isn’t a death sentence is a huge shift.
Regardless, this is Blackburn’s easiest chance to secure their own survival. With games against Coventry and Leicester to close out the season, getting three points here will be enough to ensure that they remain in the Championship for another season, and would round out a job done by John Eustace after replacing Jon Dahl Tomasson in February.
Danny Röhl came into the dugout at Hillsborough much earlier in the season, but also with a much more dire situation to sort out. The young German has impressed in his first first-team management role, but Wednesday are yet to escape the bottom three, and time is now running out if the great escape is to be completed.
There is likely to be some extraneous factors in how this match plays out on Sunday. However, concentrating on the data and statistics gathered in recent weeks and across the whole season should give us some guidance as to where to pick up some bet builder wagers from.

🎯 Shooting stats: Szmodics the most likely to provide shots
One man stands head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch in terms of goal threat.
Sammie Szmodics has had a personal season to dream of. Despite still playing in the fourth of four professional divisions at the age of 23, Szmodics has become the first Blackburn Rovers player to score 30 goals in a season since Alan Shearer and has put himself on the brink of reaching the highest level.
Szmodics has almost secured the Championship Golden Boot, and will be eager to find the target here to secure his club’s place in the league for next season, as well as getting ever closer to the personal achievement of being the league’s top goalscorer.
From a Wednesday perspective, Ike Ugbo is the main man. Averaging a much higher number of shots than any other Wednesday player this season, he is also worth adding to a multiple here.
Predictions:
⚽ Sammie Szmodics to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.28
⚽ Ike Ugbo to have 1+ shot on target @ 1.61
🚩 Corner stats: Sheffield Wednesday worth supporting in the corner markets
Blackburn are the short priced favourites in the corner match bet market, however, they look a bit short given their record in winning and conceding corners this season.
Blackburn just about edge the averages at Ewood Park by winning 5.52 corners per match and conceding 5.19, but that is a fairly close match.
Sheffield Wednesday also concede more on the road than they earn, 5.86 conceded vs 5.29 earned, but again, these margins are fairly narrow. They do not really support such a gap in the corner betting market.
Indeed, it is Wednesday who tend to play with more dribbly, ball-carrying winger types, whose presence on the pitch can often lead to corners being won for their side.
Therefore there is a small wager to be advised on the outsiders for the corner match bet, but also Wednesday are worthy of some support in the overs market. The total overs should be a good market for this match too, with both teams’ total match corner averages north of 11 corners per match.
Predictions:
⚽ Over 3.5 Sheff Wednesday corners @ 1.44
⚽ Over 4.5 Sheffield Wednesday corners @ 1.95
⚽ Over 9.5 total corners @ 1.65
⚽ Sheffield Wednesday corner match bet @ 2.80
🛑 Fouls stats: Midfield battle to produce fouls
Will Vaulks leads Sheffield Wednesday’s foul numbers and though it is a slight concern that he hasn’t fouled in his last two matches, his run of fouls before that is very convincing.
Vaulks was on a run of ten consecutive matches with at least one foul, with seven of those matches seeing Vaulks fouling twice or more. Indeed, his median number of fouls in this run was three per match.
Lining up against Vaulks, Norwegian Sondre Tronstad has enjoyed a solid first season for Blackburn. The opposite applies to Tronstad in that he has shown recently that he is a regular fouler, two in each of his last two matches. However, he did however recently have a run of seven consecutive matches with at least one foul in as well.
Predictions:
⚽ Will Vaulks to commit 2+ fouls @ 1.73
⚽ Will Vaulks to commit 3+ fouls @ 3.10
⚽ Sondre Tronstad to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.30
⚽ Sondre Tronstad to commit 2+ fouls @ 2.50
