Brentford v Fulham
Kick Off: Sunday 18th May at 15:00
Competition: Premier League
In the penultimate gameweek of the Premier League, Brentford host Fulham in a West London derby with bragging rights and distant European dreams at stake.
At present, Brentford occupy 8th position with 55 points, a position that, if maintained, would represent their best-ever finish since the Premier League’s inception, and a vast improvement on last season's performances when they came 16th.
Fulham aren’t far behind, having picked up 51 points; however, both Brighton and Bournemouth separate the two, leaving The Cottagers in 11th.
⭐ Brentford v Fulham Predictions and Best Bets
Backing Fulham to pick up two or more cards is a nice angle at 1.60. They often find themselves on the wrong side of the referee, and have received at least two cards in 61% of matches, rising to 72% when considering only their away games. When on the road, they’ve averaged a remarkable 2.5 cards per game. Additionally, Brentford’s opponents have been cautioned on two or more occasions in 69% of their league clashes to date.
In addition to picking up cards, we also think Fulham could keep Mark Flekken busy, and they look overpriced to hit 5+ shots on target at 1.83. They’ve averaged 5.53 shots on target per game, hitting at least five in 61% of their matches in the league. Brentford’s rate of 5.36 shots on target conceded per 90 is the highest rate of any side in the league, bar the already-relegated trio.
⚪ Fulham Fail to Replicate Early Form
Having started the season off strongly, things have taken a turn for the worse for Fulham, who have now lost four of their last five, only beating Southampton over that period.
For reference, that’s as many losses as they suffered across the first 20 games of the season.
Unfortunately for the Cottagers, these results haven’t been unfounded, with their win against Southampton remaining the only clash across their last two in which they've generated a higher xG than their opponents.
It’s also true that Fulham picked up a lot of points from draws across the first half of the season, with nine of their first 20 ending all square.
Since then, all 16 of their matches have produced a definitive result, with the majority ending in defeat for Fulham rather than victory.
🔴 Brentford Break New Ground Through Late-Season Hike
Having offered little to really encourage fans for most of the season, a stunning run of late form has pushed Brentford into uncharted territory, 8th place.
They’ve won each of their most recent four games, despite not having the easiest of runs, triumphing against Brighton, Nottingham Forest, Man United, and Ipswich.
Perhaps even more impressive were the back-to-back draws they secured just beforehand against Chelsea and Arsenal, extending their unbeaten run to six games.
That said, the standout performance was undoubtedly that against the Red Devils, where Thomas Frank’s men created 2.8 xG and a remarkable six big chances.
8th would be a simply massive success story for the Bees, and even as the season draws to a close, they’ll be determined as ever to take all three points from their London rivals.
📊 Brentford v Fulham Head-to-Head Key Stats
Unfortunately, the head-to-head record between these sides provides little information as to who the eventual victors might be.
The last three have yielded a win for each club alongside a 0-0 stalemate. The reverse fixture was a remarkable affair with Brentford taking an early lead through Janelt in the 24th minute, but creating little else beyond that.
A Harry Wilson super-sub brace in stoppage time was enough to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat on that occasion, with the xG reading 1.35-0.59 in favour of Fulham on that occasion.
Brentford will have to create significantly more at the Gtech stadium if they hope to get a result, having managed just five shots at Craven Cottage.
