Liverpool welcome Brighton for this FA Cup clash, with Arne Slot hoping to secure silverware in his second season in charge of the Reds.

Brighton come into this clash in poor form, having won just one of their last six matches across all competitions - though that win did come against Manchester United in the last round of the FA Cup.

📈 Liverpool v Brighton Form & Stats

Liverpool became the first side to win at the Stadium of Light during the week as they beat Sunderland 1-0 to regain some confidence after collapsing in the final stages against Manchester City last weekend. I think Liverpool will take the FA Cup pretty seriously. Aside from the Champions League, this is the only trophy that Liverpool can lift this campaign, so Slot should go with a pretty strong side.

Arne Slot will have been disappointed with the manner of the defeat to Manchester City at Anfield last weekend, but when placed in the context of Liverpool’s recent form, the loss doesn’t appear to be too damaging. That defeat was only the second that Liverpool have suffered across their last 18 matches across all competitions, the other defeat also being a last-minute goal from Bournemouth in a 4-2 defeat at the Vitality Stadium.

Brighton are in real trouble at the moment, and their limp display against Villa during the week summed up a lot of the issues that Hurzeler’s side are currently facing at the moment. Hurzeler is the youngest manager in the Premier League, and I think that has shown over recent weeks with Brighton coming into this clash without a win across their last five games in all competitions - and Hurzeler struggling to hide his frustrations.

Brighton’s away form has also been consistently poor this season; they’ve won just two of their 13 matches on the road this season, losing seven of these games and conceding 20 goals in the process. It doesn’t look like things will improve here for Brighton, seeing as they’ve only won on one of their last 10 trips to Anfield so we can expect more irritation from Hurzeler here.

📔 Liverpool v Brighton Formation & Team News

Liverpool will line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape, with Slot still working on a proper new solution. At the start of the season, I felt as though Slot was trying to replicate the system and style of PSG, with a frontline of Ekitike, Isak, and Salah. This system hasn’t been allowed to be properly tested due to injuries, and Liverpool struggling to get the balance right between defence and attack.

This led to Liverpool being far too open in transition, and direct long balls in particular started to cause them serious problems as Konate and Van Dijk were left too isolated. Slot went back to the drawing board and came back with a solid, but boring, system in which Liverpool packed the midfield - just to get them back to a level where they weren’t haemorrhaging goals.

I think we’re starting to see Liverpool come slightly out of that safety mode, though they are being limited by injuries. Endo filled in at right back during the week, but went down with injury at the Stadium of Light, leaving Liverpool once again quite like at right back - a problem that they’ve been having all season.

Brighton lined up in a 4-3-3 during the week against Aston Villa, but were very poor in this shape. Carlos Baleba was booked after two minutes in that clash, and replaced just 20 minutes later - showing what Hurzeler thought of his initial setup at Villa Park during the week.

Brighton are trying to press aggressively, but I think they lack the defensive quality to be able to do this effectively. Their defensive line is set quite high, and they have struggled to gain control in their away matches as a result because the opposition set the game to be played in transition.
