Chelsea welcome Everton with Enzo Maresca facing the most precarious moment of his Chelsea career so far, with the Blues being without a win across their last four matches in all competitions.
Everton moved up to 7th in the table with their victory against Nottingham Forest last time out, and look like a side that could push for a European spot with four wins from their last five matches in the Premier League - all of those wins have come to nil.

📈 Chelsea v Everton Form & Stats
I think the main reason why you’re seeing Chelsea struggle right now is because of fatigue. Some of these players have played nearly 70 games over the last calendar year, and it’s clearly having an effect on the side. Enzo Fernandez and Pedro Neto looked exhausted in Chelsea’s midweek assignment against Atalanta in the Champions League, and both had to be replaced before the 70th-minute mark.
Enzo Maresca also isn’t doing himself too many favours at the moment. I think he’s a really talented coach, and the perfect blend for what the owners at Chelsea want - but some of his recent tactical decisions have been really perplexing. He took off Enzo Fernandez for Malo Gusto in Chelsea’s loss to Atalanta during the week, despite having a range of attacking options on the bench - including Estevao.
I don’t think it’s time for Chelsea to consider parting ways with Maresca, but this is a bit of a worrying pattern. Chelsea collapsed in a similar manner at this stage of the season last year, crashing down the table after keeping pace with those at the summit in the early stages of the campaign. Chelsea will continue to struggle with this inconsistency as long as they persist with their youthful recruitment strategy, with there being a desperate need for some guidance in that dressing room.
Everton have been one of the most impressive sides in the Premier League this season, with their seven wins in the Premier League leaving them just one point behind Chelsea ahead of kick-off. The race for the European spots is always tight in the Premier League, but Everton have a real chance of being one of the front-runners in that race if they can be consistent.
Four of their seven wins in the Premier League have come across their last five matches, suggesting that they enter this clash with real confidence and momentum. Chelsea don’t have any of that at the moment, so Everton should feel confident enough to try and take something from the game, in Moyes’ usual low block and transitional style of play.
📔 Chelsea v Everton Formation & Team News
I’m not quite sure what Maresca’s next tactical move will be, it feels like he’s hit a block since the games against Arsenal and Barcelona - particularly against sides that line up in a low block, as Everton are expected to here.
Chelsea’s main issue in those games is a lack of creativity. The return of Cole Palmer will aid this slightly, but even when he’s in the side, the Blues can be too predictable with their attacking patterns. I think the Chelsea players would benefit from a bit more freedom in the final third, with everything at the moment looking quite scripted.
Liam Delap has picked up another injury, which worsens Chelsea’s chances of breaking down a low block. Delap hasn’t been the most effective in front of goal for the Blues yet, but offers a physical profile that Chelsea otherwise lack - making it difficult for the Blues to get much success when putting the ball in the box.
Everton will line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape, which will take on a 4-4-2 structure when they are without the ball. It’s pretty similar to the way that Moyes was playing at West Ham, but he now has dangerous players in the final third who can make more of the low-margin chances that Everton create.
The Toffees are still very direct, as shown by the 21.9 long balls per game they play in the Premier League, which is the 4th-highest tally in the division. Chelsea may struggle with this direct approach, with the backline of the Blues currently very low on confidence. Thierno Barry is worth watching in these scenarios; he’s a joke in the air (6.36 aerial duels won per 90) and scored his first goal for Everton against Nottingham Forest last week.
