Before the season started, many might’ve expected this to be a bottom v top duel, but the opposite way around. Charlton have enjoyed a very solid start to the season after promotion and are challenging for the play-offs, whilst Southampton’s poor start has seen them dismiss Will Still as manager, and they will be hoping for a reclamation project of a season.

📈Charlton v Southampton Form & Stats
Charlton have had a mixture of everything so far this season. Posting 23 points from their opening 15 games, however those points have come, can only be seen as a really positive beginning to the season for a newly-promoted side.
This success has mainly been built on a great defensive record, conceding the 2nd-fewest goals in the Championship so far. However, this is something of an overperformance as they are ranked 10th for expected goals against (xGA). Charlton are doing this mainly without the ball as well; they have the fewest number of passes completed in the league.
Southampton have seen an immediate bounce from letting Will Still go, but performances have not particularly been convincing under interim manager Tonda Eckert; indeed, what Still would have done to have had some of the slices of luck that have gone Southampton’s way post-sacking. Saints won their last two matches before the break, but still find themselves 17th.
Their season-long form should be treated with a pinch of salt, given the change of manager, but it is fair to say that Southampton have probably deserved a change in fortune for their early-season efforts. However, recent form tables have Southampton in the bottom five for xG ratio in the last five matches, and mid table over the last 10. Results have improved since Still's departure, but there isn't much in the data to suggest that performances have.
