Chelsea welcome Leeds with the Blues looking to secure their grip on the Champions League spots.

The Blues enjoyed a good weekend, beating Wolves 3-1, and now have a quieter period with games against Hull and Burnley to follow this clash, before a challenging run of fixtures.

Leeds have only lost two of their last 13 matches across all competitions ahead of this clash, with those defeats coming against Arsenal and Newcastle.

This recent run culminated in Leeds beating Forest 3-1 last time out, opening up a healthy gap between Farke’s side and the drop zone.

📈 Chelsea v Leeds Form & Tactics

Chelsea came away 3-1 winners over Wolves at the weekend in Liam Rosenior’s most comfortable victory so far. He will be a bit concerned with the drop off his side suffered in the second half of that clash, as they controlled the game in the first period but almost allowed Wolves to mount a comeback in the second 45.

The Blues have now won seven of their nine matches since Rosenior took charge. The two defeats in this sequence were both against Arsenal, so it’s hard to criticise Rosenior from a results standpoint since he came into the club.

However, I’d argue that Chelsea’s performances to earn these results haven’t been convincing, which is something to keep an eye on in the coming weeks as Chelsea enter a challenging period of the season. Chelsea’s home form hasn’t been particularly convincing in the Premier League this season, with only six wins from their 12 games at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds claimed their most important three points of the season so far on Friday night as they beat Forest 3-1 to move Daniel Farke’s side six points clear of the drop zone. Leeds have been really impressive since moving to a 3-5-2 shape, losing just two of their last 13 matches across all competitions. There are a lot of draws in this recent run, but Farke deserves serious credit for turning things around and making Leeds a competitive side.

Leeds have relied on Elland Road to get them over the line in quite a few matches this season, and the importance of their home form becomes strikingly obvious when looking over their away record. Leeds have won just one of their 12 matches on the road in the Premier League this season, conceding 25 goals across these matches. Only Burnley (5) and Wolves (3) have picked up fewer points on the road than Leeds in the Premier League this season.

📔 Chelsea v Leeds Formation & Team News

Liam Rosenior has been experimenting with quite a few different shapes since becoming Chelsea boss, so it’s not entirely clear what set up the former Strasbourg coach goes for here. Chelsea should line up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, but Rosenior can then take this in a variety of directions.

It seems as though Rosenior favours his side to build up in a back three, with one of the fullbacks then allowed to roam. Gusto and Cucurella have both operated in this role since Rosenior joined the club, but Reece James crucially hasn't, which tells us that Rosenior may also see James as a player who can slot into the back three or operate in midfield instead of pushing up into more advanced areas.

Cole Palmer should start again here, having been replaced just after the hour mark by Rosenior as he continues his climb to fitness. Levi Colwill and Romeo Lavia remain longer-term absentees, though the latter has recently been spotted in training and is nearing a return to first-team action. Jamie Gittens is also unavailable for this clash.

Leeds will lineup in a 3-5-2 shape, and I think Farke will approach this game in a similar manner to Leeds’ 3-1 win over Chelsea at Elland Road. Leeds packed the box and caused the Blues real problems with the balls they put into the box. Chelsea still struggle quite a bit with direct and physical play, which can be Leeds’ path to chances in this game.

Leeds don’t have many injury issues, but a key absence here will be Anton Stach, who has been one of their best players this season and a key operator in the middle of the park.
