📂 Leeds v Chelsea Cheat Sheet
📈 Leeds v Chelsea Form & Tactics
Chelsea will have taken real confidence from the last week as the Blues remained unbeaten across matches against Barcelona and Arsenal - two of the best sides in Europe at the moment. It feels like a significant moment for this young squad, who will now believe that they can be involved in the outcome of the title race - as well as the possibility for a deep run in Europe.
In my opinion, Chelsea have long been a solid side in those big and high profile matches - Maresca gets his plan spot on most of the time and the players are also up for it. However, the Blues have suffered in these sorts of games where they are up against sides they are expected to beat comfortably. There’s still a touch of complacency in the Chelsea side and this is clear when you look at where they’ve dropped points this term with examples including Sunderland, Qarabag and Brighton.
The pressure is increasing on Daniel Farke with Leeds losing each of their last four matches in the Premier League. Leeds have put up a fight in all of these matches, scoring in three of them - but it’s more a lack of quality rather than a lack of application with Leeds simply not able to match the quality of Premier League sides.
They have been a bit better at Elland Road, and may benefit from a more intense atmosphere in this midweek clash but the writing seems to be on the wall for Farke. The Leeds boss noted before the season that he didn’t think his side were ready for the offensive challenge of the Premier League, and the 13 goals they’ve scored so far (2nd lowest in division) would confirm that claim.
📔 Leeds v Chelsea Formation & Team News
Enzo Maresca is a very meticulous manager and changes his approach regularly, even if it looks like Chelsea play in the same way. Against low blocks, Chelsea have been allowing an extra player from the fullback areas, or midfield, to crash the box. This is usually either Marc Cucurella or Enzo Fernandez - though Maresca has rotated in midweek games before and may see other players more suited to this role.
Chelsea’s shape for large parts of this game will be a 3-2-4-1 with the Blues expected to dominate the ball. This will force Leeds back into a mid to low block, with Farke preferring his side to sit in a 4-1-4-1 shape when without the ball. This has been effective at times at Elland Road so far, though Chelsea possess the appropriate firepower to breakthrough this stubborn block.
Cole Palmer could be in for a return to the starting lineup here after making it on the bench for Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal last time out. It’s pretty impressive that Chelsea find themselves where they are in the Premier League when considering that they’ve been without the best player for so long.
Leeds are facing a bit of an issue in the middle of the park with Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach being doubts for this game, meaning that it is likely that Gruev steps into the starting XI here - this does damage the balance of the Leeds midfield with Stach and Longstaff being key performers so far.
