Croatia have been a very competitive side in recent World Cups, finishing third in 2022 after reaching the final in 2018.

There is plenty of vital experience in this squad, and they will need to utilise all of that to progress from a competitive Group L, which contains England, Ghana and Panama.

🌍 How did Croatia qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

Croatia breezed through their qualification group, although that comes as no surprise considering they were up against the Czech Republic, the Faroe Islands, Montenegro, and Gibraltar. However, the nature in which they performed was impressive - Croatia scored 26 goals and conceded just four, winning seven out of eight in total.

Croatia’s biggest win was a 7-0 victory against Gibraltar on the opening matchday, and they only dropped points against the Czech Republic in Prague. Zlatko Dalic opted for some rotation towards the end, once qualification was confirmed, and Andrej Kramaric finished as the top scorer for Croatia with six goals from his eight appearances.

👔 Who is the Croatia manager at the World Cup 2026?

Dalic has been Croatia's manager since 2017, but he has had to adapt his side in recent years. Marcelo Brozovic has retired from international football, while Mateo Kovacic has missed large parts of this season through injury.

Dalic has shifted from a 4-3-3 to a 3-4-3 system, which appears to suit the current profile of the squad better and highlights his tactical flexibility, especially with Croatia needing to find a new balance in midfield areas.

🔎 Who are Croatia's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Luka Modric

Modric is still going strong at a domestic level, and he has been a key player for AC Milan this season. The 40-year-old has started 28 of Milan’s 30 league games this campaign, and has contributed two goals and three assists.

Modric also featured in all eight of Croatia’s qualifying matches, registering one goal and two assists. He is set to feature in his fifth World Cup this season, and that experience will be vital for his national side.

Ivan Perisic

Ivan Perisic is another experienced campaigner still going strong, and the 37-year-old seems to only be improving with age. In fact, he has registered eight goals and 11 assists in 37 appearances for PSV this season - those numbers are incredibly impressive, especially for a wingback.

He perfectly suits this Croatia side and is given plenty of attacking freedom to get forward. He contributed four goals and four assists during the qualifiers, highlighting his influence in the final third.

Mario Pasalic

Mario Pasalic has nine goals and four assists to his name this season for Atalanta, but he seems to have hit a rich vein of form at the right time.

In fact, five of those 13 goal involvements have come in his last ten appearances alone. Two of those goals have come in the Champions League as well, highlighting an affinity to pop up with big goals against the top sides.

Pasalic is expected to play as an inside forward for Croatia, which increases his prospects in the final third even further.

Best Free Bets, Offers & Betting Sites for World Cup 2026

The World Cup is the ideal time to create a new bookmaker account because the Bookmaker Offers are much better. Andy and the Andy's Bet Club experts have tried and tested the Free Bets and here's their favourites:

Some bookmakers are offering odds of 100/1 for Croatia to win the World Cup, which is surprising when you consider they finished third in 2022 and second in 2018.

As they have shown in the last two World Cups, Croatia are often underestimated by punters and opponents at the World Cup.

Despite this, the core of their team is ageing, and this may play a role in their pricing to win the World Cup overall.

Expect them to go far, as they know how to get over the line, but winning it overall is unlikely.

Croatia will be in Group L alongside England, Panama, and Ghana.

GK: Livaković

DEF: Stanišić, Pongračić, Ćaleta-Car, Gvardiol

MID: Modrić, Kovačić

ATT: Pašalić, Kramarić, Perišić

FWD: Budimir

England vs Croatia kicks off at 20:00 GMT on June 17. Panama vs Croatia kicks off at 23:00 GMT on June 23. Croatia vs Ghana kicks off at 21:00 GMT on June 27.

Croatia should have prepared for a scenario in which Modric is absent for key games.

The 40-year-old Ballon D'Or winner will have limited ahead of him, given his age and the heat in North America this summer.

Luka Sucic would be an appropriate replacement and has been a mainstay in the Sociedad team since signing from RB Salzburg in 2024.

Luka Modrić, Andrej Kramarić, and Ivan Perišić are on penalties for Croatia, with van Perišić, Luka Modrić, Ante Budimir, and Lovro Majer on free-kicks.
