Group J: England to Top the Group, Ghana to Qualify & Harry Kane Clear Top Group Goalscorer

England’s qualifying group was not the most testing, but winning all eight games without conceding a goal cannot be ignored.

Tuchel’s side scored 22 goals across these games as well, an overall record which represents England’s best record in qualifying - which is some achievement given how seamless Southgate made qualifying for major tournaments in previous years.

In Thomas Tuchel, England have a manager who understands knockout football really well and also appreciates the importance of momentum which is something England have struggled to build in past international tournaments, even when going deep.

Even in the near misses of Southgate’s tenure, there was always a feeling that England got a bit lucky with the draw or had to really grind to results. This is a natural byproduct of international football, but I do think the qualifying record shows that Tuchel will demand a strong start and he certainly has the best crop of players in this group to do so.

Kane is a natural choice for top goalscorer, his international record is astounding with 78 goals across 112 caps and he’s on penalties for England. He comes into the tournament having netted 64 goals for Bayern across just 56 appearances this season, and was also England’s top scorer in qualifying with eight goals.

I’ve then gone for Ghana to qualify from the group. There’s been a lot of chaos in the camp, but in Carlos Quieroz they have an experienced manager who has headed up teams at four previous World Cup tournaments and sets high standards.

The turbulent nature of the build up to the tournament may affect the Black Stars, but in all honesty a lot of the African federations have to deal with these situations - Ivory Coast sacked their manager halfway through the AFCON last year and still managed to lift the trophy.

Ghana have the players to create moments out of nothing, Quieroz should be able to give them a basic but strong defensive base which then platforms the likes of Semenyo, Kudus, Fatawu and Ayew to cause opponents problems.

Group L Preview

England’s group is one of the most intriguing at the World Cup, with Tuchel’s squad set to face off against an ageing Croatia side, a Ghana outfit that historically do well in the group stages and a Panama team that could spring a few surprises in what is set to be a competitive group.

England are favourites to top the group, though are likely to be challenged by Croatia and Ghana for this number one spot. England don’t tend to show their best side in the group stages of international tournaments, though Tuchel’s impressive record with England during qualifying may suggest that the Three Lions have a better start to the tournament this time around.

Ghana are an interesting team to keep an eye on here. They parted ways with manager Otto Addo just 72 days before the World Cup and have appointed Carlos Queiroz to take charge of the side following quite a turbulent few months for the Black Stars. They have players who can produce individual moments, many with Premier League experience, such as Fatawu, Semenyo, Ayew, Partey and Kudus.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England

England travel to the 2026 World Cup headed up by Thomas Tuchel, who has been tasked with delivering the elusive international trophy that England have got so close to over the last few competitions.

Gareth Southgate has given the former Chelsea boss a very solid base to work from, with the positive mood and togetherness inside the England camp being one of the biggest achievements of Southgate’s tenure.

England are one of the favourites to win the World Cup, but are pretty closely ranked alongside the likes of Spain and France for football’s biggest trophy.

🇭🇷 Croatia

Croatia have been a very competitive side in recent World Cups, finishing third in 2022 after reaching the final in 2018. There is plenty of vital experience in this squad, and they will need to utilise all of that to progress from a competitive Group L.

Their most recent appearance at a major international competition saw Croatia eliminated in the group stages at Euro 2024, but they were dealt a tough group draw alongside Spain, Italy and Albania. Croatia have a much more favourable draw this time round, so they will be confident of making it far in the competition.

🇬🇭 Ghana

Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup this summer. The 2026 edition will be 20 years since the Black Stars qualified for the global showpiece for the first time. Despite reaching the quarter-finals in 2010, Ghana have not past the group stages since and will hope to break that trend in USA, Canada, and Mexico.

New coach Carlos Queiroz brings considerable experience and hunger to the role. With in-form players like Antoine Semenyo providing a real threat going forward, the Black Stars have the quality to make their presence felt.

🇵🇦 Panama

Eight years on from their historic debut at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Panama return to football’s biggest stage this summer. Los Canaleros failed to make it out of the group back then, and there is a real danger of history repeating itself.

I think it’s hard to look past Panama propping up Group L. Los Canaleros will be targeting a first-ever World Cup victory when they face Ghana in their opening fixture, but I suspect the African heavyweights’ superior quality will tell. Thereafter, meetings with Croatia and England are unlikely to yield any points. Panama left Russia 2018 empty-handed from all three of their group matches, and I think there is a strong chance they’ll suffer a similar fate this summer.
