This weekend’s Saturday Night Football sees Crystal Palace take on Nottingham Forest. Both sides have had more than respectable starts to their Premier League campaigns. Forest were once again a side that many predicted to face the drop this season after the number of new players they brought in once again and the loss of Brennan Johnson.
So far they have looked very solid. The only defeats they have suffered came against Arsenal, Man United and Man City. Two of which sit in the top three of the table. Taiwo Awoniyi has stepped up in the place of Johnson and has been a huge threat every time he’s played.
Crystal Palace are also enjoying a strong start to the season. The only defeats they have suffered came against Arsenal and Aston Villa. Their last result was by far their best of the season as they beat Man United by a goal to nil at Old Trafford, just days after the Manchester club knocked them out of the Carabao Cup.
Today we’re going through what looks to be a very interesting fixture. We’ll be breaking down our cheat sheet and finding what we believe to be the best value picks on Paddy Power.

Without further ado, let’s get stuck into the breakdown.
Hodgson’s Palace in form
In the last ten days, Crystal Palace have taken two trips to Old Trafford. United controlled the cup game and cruised to a 3-0 win but Hodgson was watching closely and clearly learned a lot from the game and managed to get a 1-0 win in the second game against Erik ten Hag’s team. This result has taken Palace to ninth in the league, leapfrogging United in the process.
Hodgson will be hoping his side can build on this win and get another three points. This time around they’ll have their home support behind them. But they’ll have a hungry Nottingham Forest side looking to get in their way.
Forest climbing the table
Nottingham Forest have shown plenty of fight this season. The desire and passion in their team has been personified in the way they have been able to fight back from adversity on multiple occasions. Their last game against Brentford saw them go down to ten men and 1-0 down in a two-minute period, but they still fought back and got a point.
Similarly against Burnley a few weeks ago, they found themselves 1-0 down but managed to get a draw. The issue for them is away form, but when you look at the teams they’ve faced, you’d expect them to lose each one. They have suffered defeats to Arsenal, Man United and Man City away. But they did manage to beat an out-of-sync Chelsea side by a goal to nil at Stamford Bridge. Can they travel to London and get another positive result?
🎯Crystal Palace offensive stats: Swimming against the tide
Palace are injury-stricken in the offensive area of the pitch. Top goalscorer Odsonne Edouard is a doubt and Eberechi Eze has recently sustained a hamstring injury which will keep him sidelined for around six weeks. Those two have been Roy Hodgson’s main attacking threats, having 47 shots between them already this season.
Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp will need to step up in this one. The two have been relatively quiet this season but this can be put down to how brilliant Eze and Edouard have been. The two average more than a shot per 90.
🎯 Nottingham Forest offensive stats: All on Taiwo?
Taiwo Awoniyi has been superb so far this season, he’s been a real threat for every defence that he’s come up against. He’s taken nine shots so far and scored three of them. He’s not a volume shooter but he certainly knows where the goal is.
He’s also the joint top assister for Forest this season. He is the danger man. This is why we’re looking at an Awoniyi goal or assist. The odds aren’t bad at all:
- To score or assist – 3.00
- To score anytime – 3.30
- Anytime assist – 12.00
🛑 Crystal Palace defensive stats: Ayew angry
In terms of fouls this season, there has been a resounding stats leader in the Palace ranks. This is Jordan Ayew. The Ghanaian forward has committed 13 this season to an average of more than two per game. He’s not just the player to initiate fouls either, he also draws them a lot. He has been fouled 25 times this season for an average of 3.97 times per 90. He’s highly involved in this side of the game.
Will Hughes is also one to keep an eye on this weekend, it looks likely that he’ll start and most of Forest’s fouls drawn have come from midfield areas. This is the kind of game where the ball will get congested in midfield for long periods at a time which could lead to the former Watford man committing fouls. He’s played just three 90s so far this season but averages 1.33 fouls per 90 minutes.
🛑 Nottingham Forest defensive stats: Toffolo on the radar
Moussa Niakhate has been playing left back for Forest this season but due to his sending off against Brentford he will be unavailable to face Palace. Many predicted lineups have Harry Toffolo starting at left back. The reason he is such a draw is the opponent he would be up against. It’s the man we discussed above, Jordan Ayew. He’s fouled 3.97 times per 90 on average.
Toffolo has hardly played this season and will come into the game with some cobwebs to dust off. He will be targeted by Ayew. Due to his limited playing time, we don’t have stats to back it up but based on how the game looks likely to pan out he looks like a very good shout. The prices are also very good:
- 1+ fouls – 1.57
- 2+ fouls – 3.60
- To be shown a card – 2.40
