England have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Panama and Ghana, so a top-two finish will be the minimum expectation for Thomas Tuchel’s men.

With 48 teams in the World Cup this year, there are plenty of different permutations and routes for England to get to the final.

🏆 What Happens if England Win Group L?

If England top Group L, they would face the best third-placed team from Groups E, H, I, J, or K in the round of 32. That match will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on June 1st, with kick-off at 5pm local time. England will play their final group stage game on June 27th, making it quite a short turn-around to travel such a long distance. Luckily for them, however, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is fully air-conditioned.

The most likely opponents for England in this round would be Ivory Coast or Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Senegal or Norway, Algeria, or DR Congo. At the same time, the winner of Group A will face the best third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H, I.

The winner of this round of 32 playoff match will face England. Group A is one of the weaker ones on paper, but it does contain host-nation Mexico, who are favourites to top that group. That means England could face Mexico in Mexico City for the round of 16, which isn’t an easy matchup. Estadio Azteca has quite mild temperatures, but it is over 2,200 metres above sea level, which will definitely have an impact on the England squad.

The Three Lions will be on different sides of the draw as Spain, Argentina and France, assuming all four top their groups, meaning England will avoid FIFA’s top three ranked nations until at least the semi-finals if they can make it there.

2️⃣ What Happens if England Finish 2nd in Group L?

Finishing second in Group L would put England in a much more precarious position, and it would send them to the BMO Field in Toronto for their round of 32 match.

This is a significantly less favourable scenario than winning the group in terms of both the travel and the likely opponent. The conditions in Toronto are much more comfortable than the southern venues, with average June temperatures at 25 degrees Celsius, but England will face the second-place side from Group K, which contains Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia. The South American side are most likely to finish second.

Assuming England make it past that round, they will face either the winner of Group H or the second-placed side in Group J. Spain are the overwhelming favourites to top Group H, which could set up an enticing matchup in the round of 16 against the current European champions. This will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Texas, which has a capacity of 94,000 spectators.

If England make it through that stage, they are likely to face either host-nation USA or Belgium in the quarter-finals.

3️⃣ What Happens if England Finish 3rd in Group L?

A third-place finish in Group L would represent a significant disappointment, and England would need to be among the eight best third-placed teams across all twelve groups to advance. Should they achieve that, their round of 32 fixture will likely be against the Group K winners - which will probably be Portugal. That match takes place at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, which is a challenging, hot climate with temperatures averaging around 28 degrees Celsius with no roof.

There are a lot of different permutations for England if they finish third, as it will be based on points, goal difference and goal scored across all 12 groups. Whether England even ranks as the top eight teams will be completely dependent on other teams' performances.
