Everton and Liverpool collide at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening in what could be one of the most significant Merseyside Derbies in recent memory. 

A victory for the Toffees over their bitter rivals would open up an eight-point gap between themselves and 18^th-placed Luton in the drop zone, all but securing their Premier League status for another season.

Anything other than a win for Liverpool (2^nd) in their neighbour’s backyard meanwhile, would put another massive dent in the Reds’ title hopes and their dreams of landing a second Premier League crown for Jurgen Klopp ahead of the German’s impending summer departure.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool have been the dominant force in the Merseyside Derby in recent seasons the Reds reaffirmed their top-dog status in the city when they eased to a 2-0 win over Everton at Anfield in October.

Aided by a first-half Ashley Young red card, Liverpool racked up a whopping 26 attempts against the Toffees on that occasion, lodged an xG of 2.20 and won 12 corners to their rival’s four.

Young’s red was one of five cards brandished in Everton’s defeat and the last five derby encounters between the Blues and Liverpool have averaged 5.20 cards per 90 minutes. With so much at stake for both teams, the latest iteration of the Merseyside Derby should be just as combative.

Liverpool will be chasing their fifth win in six encounters with Everton this week, while the Toffees have also failed to score in each of the last four editions of the derby and under 2.5 goals were registered in each of those four skirmishes.

The last five Merseyside Derbies also featured an average of 13.2 corners per game, with Liverpool winning the aggregate corner battle from those fixtures 48-18.

Everton earned a potentially season-defining win in the “points deduction derby” over relegation rivals Nottingham Forest on Sunday and though the triumph was achieved in controversial circumstances, the Toffees are unlikely to lose any sleep.

That victory was the Toffees’ second win in a row at Goodison Park and it’s worth noting that both of those positive results against Forest (2-0) and Burnley (1-0) respectively, were accompanied by clean sheets.

Indeed, that trend has repeated itself numerous times this season and all five of Everton’s home wins this term included a clean sheet for Sean Dyche’s men. However, when the Toffees concede at home, they struggle to recover and they failed to win 100% of the ten games at Goodison Park in which the visitors scored.

Goalscoring for the division’s second-lowest scoring outfit (34) has been a major issue across the entire campaign, though defensively, they have an impressive body of work to look back on and only the Premier League’s current top four sides (Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and Villa) have conceded fewer goals than the stingy Blues.

Everton have only claimed one point from three meetings with Arsenal (0-1), Man City (1-3) and Aston Villa (0-0) at Goodison Park this season however, which suggests they should find the going tough against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Nevertheless, the Blues’ haul of six points from their last three assignments has allowed them to put daylight between themselves and the relegation zone, while Dyche’s survival chasers still have a game in hand over all of the teams around them.

📊 Liverpool Form and Stats

Liverpool came through a tricky test at Fulham in competent style in their last outing on Sunday and having avoided that potential banana skin at Craven Cottage, their confidence should be flowing at a steadier ebb.

The Reds put three goals past the Cottagers in London and that was the 14^th time in 33 Premier League fixtures this season where Liverpool managed to notch three or more times.

Diogo Jota’s win-capping third goal, which was his first strike since early February, also felt significant, but the Portuguese has since been ruled out of the Everton clash.

Liverpool did allow Fulham to equalise before they eventually roared to victory and defensive lapses have been common enough for the Reds this year. In fact, in the 14 league fixtures they’ve navigated since January 1^st, Jurgen Klopp’s troops kept just two clean sheets.

The title hopefuls have posted impressive figures in other metrics elsewhere, however. Liverpool rank top for xGF (74.4) and for average shots per 90 (19.50), while only Man City (7.78) have been winning more corners per game than the Reds (7.39).

Liverpool have also lost fewer away games in the Premier League this term (2) than anyone else and one of those two setbacks occurred in highly controversial circumstances at Tottenham in late September.

Indeed, teams generally need a dollop of fortune to get a result against Jurgen Klopp’s relentless outfit and in 33 Premier League matches so far this season, Liverpool have lost the xG battle just six times.

The Reds will kick off Wednesday evening’s meeting with Everton level on points with Arsenal at the division’s summit, however, Man City would move two points clear of both Liverpool and the Gunners if the Cityzens win their game in hand.

Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Fulham felt like a ship-steadying result after a spell where their campaign looked on the verge of collapse and with their wobble behind them, the Reds’ superior firepower could allow them to outgun Everton for the fifth time in six Merseyside Derbies.

A tally of just two clean sheets in 14 league fixtures points suggests a shutout at Goodison Park is unlikely however, and that record makes combining an away win with both teams to score an attractive prospect at 2.75 with bet365.
