Resistencia v Guaireña
🏟
Friday 5th August – 10:00PM KO
A late change of scenery means that this game will be played at the national stadium the Defensores del Chaco, the last time Resistencia played there they lost 4-0 to Libertad. Coincidentally they go into Friday’s clash also having lost 4-0 to the defending champions. Guaireña travel to the capital Asunción following a midweek victory at home in the Copa Paraguay against 2nd division Trinidense.
Tiburón Torres was downbeat following the thrashing at Libertad, calling it the “worst game of the season”. But he has reason for cheer as Fernando Escobar returns from suspension, the striker could go straight back into the starting XI over Alan Pereira. Meanwhile Wilfredo Báez is likely to get into the team after Jonathan Rivero failed to impress.
Guaireña arrive having lost their last two league games, both 2-1, with Nildo Viera scoring consolations. The former Guaraní striker was rested in the cup game midweek so we can expect him to take the field on Friday. One player that isn’t available is Richard Salinas who is serving the second of a two-game suspension. It is a significant miss as the 27-year-old attacking midfielder has provided more assists than anybody else at the club this year.
Resistencia have struggled for goals, but are continually overpriced especially against a side that has failed to win in their last 8 league matches in the Paraguayan capital. The previous two meetings this year were draws (0-0 and 2-2). Guaireña’s troubles on their travels coupled with Salinas’ suspension favours the triangulo rojo.

12 de Octubre v Libertad
🏟
Saturday 6th August – 10:00PM
Daniel Garnero’s Libertad seem to have finally shaken off the cobwebs and are finding the form that took them to a record-breaking points total in the first half of the year. The 4-0 thumping of Resistencia was only their second win of the season but they are topscorers with 10 goals after four games, only failing to score once in their last 14 games in all competitions.
12 de Octubre recorded a rare victory last weekend, surprising a disjointed Guaraní with an 86th minute winner from former Tacuary midfielder Elvio Britez. That win in Asunción ended a run of five straight defeats, and the tejedores are on a similar run at home. Five consecutive defeats conceding 12 in that spell.
The gumarelo are at full strength other than long term injuries to Cristian Riveros, but the veteran’s replacement Diego Gómez, some 20 years his junior, has been getting better and better even scoring his first senior goal against Resistencia. Lorenzo Melagrejo leads the scoring charts with four strikes in four games while Roque Santa Cruz has proved an able companion, scoring twice already in the Clausura.
Libertad have struggled on their travels, their last win outside of the Paraguayan capital was a 1-0 victory over General Caballero JLM in April. However, the recurring theme, even in defeat, has been goals. They average 2.27 per game in the league during 2022 and are facing a side that has conceded 1.73 on average in the same period.
