Roda JC v Jong Ajax
🏟
Friday 12th August – 7:00PM KO
In the second round of the Dutch Eerste Divisie, Jong Ajax will travel to the far South of the country to play Roda JC. In their first match of the season, Jong Ajax fielded a team with mostly players who’d been there last season, but very few of them really seem to have a chance to make it to the first team. One big change is that Francisco Conceicao made his debut for Ajax in an official game and immediately got on the score board. The Portuguese signing is expected to get a few more games in the academy team before moving onto the first team and that is useful for the academy side, because the attacking quality seems deficient at Jong Ajax.
Roda JC had a steady start to the season in Dordrecht. Two early goals sealed the deal for Roda. They continued attacking and created lots of decent scoring chances, but a Dordrecht goalie in form and some sloppy finishing meant it stayed at that. It does mean that Roda seem ready for the fight this early in the season. They saw German midfielder Patrick Pflucke get a move to Switzerland, but kept the rest of the base from last year together. It means they’ll be a candidate to challenge for promotion and a Jong Ajax that is still very much in the build-up phase this early in the season, should be an opponent they can beat. That’s why I’d go on the home side to take the three points here.

Telstar v PEC Zwolle
🏟
Friday 12th August – 7:00PM KO
PEC Zwolle started well on their return to the second division. PEC got promoted to the top flight in 2013 and did since become a respectable top division team, even winning the Dutch cup and Super Cup. In those nine years, they build a steady base of fans and income, and their relegation last season came as a bit of a shock. It does mean that they are one of the wealthiest clubs in this division and their goal is to get promoted as soon as possible.
They are one of the title favourites this season. They kept manager Dick Schreuder, who took charge of the team back in December when the club seemed dead and buried in the top flight. They went on a massive run and almost avoided relegation, but it was too little too late. Counting from the moment Schreuder took over, PEC would have even been in the top half of the table, so they tried to build onto that feeling. They lost several key players, but also kept hold of several of the starters from the last six months. Based on the squad and their first game (victory over De Graafschap), they are considered a favourite to go back up in one season.
With Telstar, they’ll probably face one of the weakest teams in the league. They finished next to bottom last season and there is very little that suggests they’ll do much better this season. Manager Andries Jonker left because he was ready for a step-up, but he’ll struggle to get anything after next year. With Mike Snoei they replaced him with someone who had his best time as a manager over a decade ago, so I can’t see that bid well for this season, nor this game.
