📂 Sunderland v Fulham Cheat Sheet
📈 Sunderland v Fulham Form & Stats
Sunderland recovered well from their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool last time out in the Premier League by getting past Oxford in the FA Cup. That defeat at the Stadium of Light represented the first loss that Sunderland have suffered at home in the Premier League this season - a remarkable achievement for a newly promoted side.
Sunderland don’t tend to get blown away, even that defeat to Liverpool was only by a one goal margin so they are being competitive in every game they play at this level. Regis Le Bris deserves real credit for the job he’s done with this Sunderland side, they aren’t quite as impressive as they were in the early parts of the campaign but they have all but secured their status in the Premier League for another season.
Marco Silva is one of the most consistent managers in the Premier League. He’s got real tactical acumen and manages to keep Fulham as a competitive force in the division despite often working with a non-existent budget. His main concern here will be how poor his side have been on the road this term, Fulham have only won three of their 13 away matches in the Premier League - losing eight of these games.
Fulham’s recent form will also encourage Sunderland, they come to the Stadium of Light having lost each of their last three matches in the Premier League. However, Fulham did manage to beat Sunderland when the sides last met with Marco Silva’s side running out 1-0 winners in that clash thanks to a late strike from Raul Jimenez.
📔 Sunderland v Fulham Formation & Team News
I find that Regis Le Bris comes up with a specific plan for his side depending on what he thinks the opposition will do. Sunderland haven’t been playing with a fixed shape this term, but their approach tends to be the same - be defensively solid, passive and look to pick off the opposition in transition and set pieces. This was the formula that earned Sunderland promotion from the Championship, and it has served them well in the Premier League so far.
Sunderland will be without their best and most influential player in Granit Xhaka here. He is nearing a return, but won’t be fit in time for this game which means we are likely to see a midfield trio of Diarra, Sadiki and Le Fee. Sunderland lose a bit of their steel when Xhaka isn’t in the side, and it’s no surprise that their first defeat at the Stadium of Light came when Xhaka was out of the side.
Fulham have a much more consistent set up when it comes to their shape. Silva prefers a 4-2-3-1, which looks more like a 4-4-2 when Fulham are without the ball. He has gone with a 3-4-3 at times during his spell with the Cottagers, but this shape tends to be reserved for games where Silva thinks that Fulham may be on the back foot or not have as much of the ball.
A key absence for Fulham here is Sasa Lukic who adds a natural tenacity to Fulham’s midfield. This should see Alex Iwobi drop back into a deeper role - where he’s actually been pretty effective for Fulham.
