📈 Girona v Real Madrid Form & Stats

Despite an incredible 2023/24 season which saw Girona defy the odds and finish in 3rd place, the inevitable exodus of players has hit the club hard. After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, they once again find themselves precariously placed in 18th.

Girona failed to win their first seven La Liga matches, but have seen an improvement since the start of October, winning two, drawing two, and losing two of their last six La Liga matches. The underlying data doesn’t paint a particularly good picture, their performances have generally been reflective of their overall league position, with a slight underperformance on xGF and slight overperformance on xGA.

Real Madrid have looked an imperious force so far this season, currently sitting top of the league and dropping just seven points in La Liga all season. However, a minor recent blip after two consecutive draws has handed some impetus back to Barcelona, they now sit just one point behind Real Madrid.

The xG table has Real Madrid occupying 1st position in the league, so their performances have been reflective of their league position, although they are overperforming their expected points by 3.9.

Kylian Mbappe has been a cornerstone of Real Madrid’s success with a whopping 13 goals in 13 La Liga games this season.

📔 Girona v Real Madrid Formation & Team News

Girona have been tactically adaptable this season, often changing their formation depending on the opposition. Michel’s tactics involve high fluidity, positional rotation, and a possession-based style. Wingers are positioned high and wide to stretch the opposition defence, facilitating space for the full backs and central midfielders to influence the game in central areas. Such is the level of positional fluidity and attention to detail that Girona will often switch formations multiple times during a match.

Girona has a lengthy injury list with Ricard Artero, Juan Carlos, Vladyslav Krapyvtsov, Portu, and Donny van de Beek all on the sidelines. There are still injury question marks looming over Daley Blind, David Lopez, and Thomas Lemar.

Despite being a regular user of the 3-4-3 formation at Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso has generally used a 4-2-3-1 at Real Madrid to better facilitate the attacking personnel, this has sometimes morphed into a 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 when out of possession. Real Madrid look to control possession by creating positional overloads in certain areas, before quickly exploiting space through wide areas. Real Madrid thrive on the counter-attack, utilising the vacated space by the opposition.

Real Madrid are handicapped by a number of defensive injuries, with Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, and Antonio Rudiger all missing. While David Alaba, Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono are pushing towards fitness and may feature. Thibaut Courtois is struggling with illness and may miss out here.
