Scotland will continue their attempt to qualify for a first World Cup since 1998 when they host Greece at Hampden on Thursday.

Steve Clarke’s side have made a promising start to the campaign, kicking off with a pragmatic draw against Denmark then following that up with a win away to Belarus.

Greece, though, have established themselves as one of the international teams to watch in the coming years, with a bright crop of players coming through. After beating the Scots comprehensively in Glasgow in March’s Nations League play-off, Clarke knows about their qualities only too well.

Scotland Double Chance @ 1.36

While Scotland’s home form has been dismal of late, there is reason to believe that Steve Clarke’s side will emerge with a positive result. The statistics show that the 3-0 loss to Greece in March was far tighter than the final score. Scotland matched their opponents’ five shots on target in that game and were edged 0.84-1.38 in terms of xG.

On top of this, Scotland have two critical players back. Aaron Hickey’s return to fitness is an immense boost in an otherwise problematic right back position, while Ben Gannon-Doak brings attacking thrust that can otherwise be missing.

The hosts, meanwhile, have picked up some momentum after solid displays on the road last month and should be confident of replicating those.

Over 1.5 Goals @ 1.33

Greece’s scoring power in recent international matches has been impressive, particularly when playing away from home, and that should mean there are goals at Hampden. The travelling side have netted at least two goals in each of their last five away games, all of which have been competitive fixtures. That includes three in Glasgow back in March.

The March fixtures between these sides also point to the fact that goals will be scored. The combined xG of the two teams across those encounters was 6.55, with the Hampden leg contributing 2.22 of this.

There’s also a lot riding on this game, particularly for the Greeks, whose hopes of qualification will hang in the balance if they lose. As soon as the first goal is scored, this encounter has the potential to become very open.

Konstantinos Mavropanos to have 1+ Shots @ 1.83

Through the opening two qualification games, no Greek player has had more shots or shots on target than centre back Mavropanos. Across those fixtures, he has had seven efforts, four of which have found the target in what has been a quite staggering return.

He’s no stranger to trying his luck against Scotland, either. Although he failed to get a shot away at Hampden, he had three efforts when Greece dominated the home leg in Athens.

Indeed, he has had at least one shot in four of Greece’s last five competitive matches, which earmarks him as a bigger threat to hitting the target than his odds would suggest.

Also worth strong consideration is backing Mavropanos to have a shot on target at 5.0.

Scott McTominay to have 1+ Shots on Target @ 1.33

Scott McTominay may be on a run of four international matches without finding the net, but he continues to pose opposing defences issues and remains Scotland’s major goal threat.

He was voted 18th in the recent Ballon d’Or thanks to his goalscoring contribution for Napoli last season, and it was at international level that he has honed this talent in recent years.

The former Manchester United man scored Scotland’s goal in the Nations League play-offs in Greece from the penalty spot, and though he has failed to tally in subsequent matches, he has managed multiple shots in each game as well as at least one shot on target.

McTominay had five shots as well as three on target when Greece visited Scotland earlier this year, highlighting the threat that he carries.

📈 Scotland v Greece Form & Tactics

These sides met as recently as March in a Nations League play-off in which Greece triumphed 3-1 on aggregate. Scotland won the away leg in Athens 1-0 thanks to a goal from Scott McTominay, but were comprehensively beaten in Glasgow three days later as Giannis Konstantelias produced a masterclass for the visitors by scoring one and creating two more.

Scotland’s Hampden form is a cause for growing concern. Although a fine win was claimed against Croatia, that is the sole success in their last nine at the national stadium dating back to June 2023. The 3-1 loss Clarke’s side suffered in a friendly against Iceland was a particularly embarrassing affair, although this largely came about due to a string of goalkeeping calamities.

Clarke’s side should, though, be buoyed by the start they have made to World Cup qualifying. Denmark were stifled impressively in Copenhagen, with the Scots having chances on the break to do better than the 0-0 final score, while a 2-0 win over Belarus on neutral territory was a polished, professional if unspectacular job.

By contrast, Greece are a team in fine form. They have won 10 of their last 13 matches and have proven to be particularly effective on the road. Ivan Jovanovic’s side have secured five successive away wins, including victories over England, Ireland and, of course, the aforementioned success in Glasgow.

The Greeks have also been particularly potent in an offensive sense. In their six 2025 fixtures, they have scored three or more goals on four occasions. It’s been boom or bust, though. In the other two games, they have been shut out entirely.

📔 Scotland v Greece Formation & Team News

Scotland have the luxury of having all their key players available for this game.

While Steve Clarke would ideally consider Craig Gordon his first-choice keeper, the Hearts man has not played this season due to injury and will likely act as understudy to Angus Gunn, who was injured during the Scots’ last home match with Greece.

A major boost for Scotland is the return of Aaron Hickey at right back after missing virtually the whole of last season due to injury. His presence makes a return to a five-man defence possible, with Celtic’s Kieran Tierney slotting in as the third centre back in a role he has played brilliantly at international level.

Another fresh problem for the Greeks will be Ben Gannon-Doak. The Bournemouth winger was absent for March’s fixtures, but at 19 he is already developing into a key player for his country, showing pace, power and trickery on the wing.

Greece, meanwhile, uniformly play in a 4-2-3-1 setup that they have little reason to change due to positive recent results. Centre back Panagiotis Retsos has dropped out of the squad due to injury.

📊 Scotland v Greece Key Stats

  • Scotland have won only one of their last nine home matches.

  • Greece have won their last five away fixtures, scoring at least two goals in each game.

  • Both teams have scored in only two of Scotland’s last nine outings and only two of the last six for Greece.

  • There have been three or more goals in each of Greece’s last five games.
