Scotland will resume their quest to reach next year’s World Cup when they face Greece at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium on Saturday night.

After claiming back-to-back wins over the Greeks and Belarus last month, Scotland have guaranteed a top-two finish in Group C.

To finish top of the section, Steve Clarke’s side will almost certainly have to avoid defeat on Saturday night ahead of a potential do-or-die clash with Denmark on Tuesday.

As for Greece, their qualification hopes have been extinguished with two games to spare, meaning this game is effectively a dead-rubber as far as the hosts are concerned.

These recommended Best Bet Builder Bookmakers are worth a look for the weekend.

Greece Double Chance @ 1.25

While Scotland ran out 3-1 winners when the two nations met at Hampden last month, their triumph doesn't tell the whole story. Scotland were second best for long spells of that contest before a late three-goal flurry saw them pinch all three points. Steve Clarke’s side also underwhelmed when squeezing past Belarus three days later, so it’s difficult to have too much faith in the Scots turning over Greece in Piraeus.

Yes, the Greeks have nothing but pride to play for on Saturday night, but I don’t think they will go down without a fight, especially in front of their own supporters. Moreover, Ivan Jovanovic’s team have long been a tough nut to crack on home soil, losing just four of their last 20 matches as hosts.

That doesn't bode well for a Scotland side that tends to do their best work at their Hampden home. What’s more, Steve Clarke is renowned for his safety-first preferences, so I think he will set out to get a draw on Saturday night with a view to setting up a straight shootout with Denmark next week. Therefore, I'm keen to oppose the Scots here, with the hosts holding an appeal on the double chance.

Over 1.5 Goals @ 1.33

Greece’s games have been goal-heavy across the opening four matchdays, and I think that trend could continue on Saturday night given the already-eliminated hosts can play with freedom and let the handbrake off. The Greeks’ opening four assignments in Group C have yielded 6, 3, 4, and 4 match goals, one of which was, of course, against Scotland last month.

It’s also worth noting that each of Greece’s six group stage games during the most recent Nations League campaign generated a minimum of two match strikes, not to mention one of their two subsequent play-off ties with Scotland also delivered over 1.5 goals.

While Scotland are a nation that you wouldn't typically associate with high-scoring games, each of their last three Group C contests have produced a minimum of two match goals, as did four of their six pool fixtures during last year’s Nations League.

What’s more, Scotland conceded the first goal against Greece last month, and a repeat here would mean that they would have to force the issue to remain in contention for automatic qualification, further strengthening the case for this showdown to feature two goals or more.

Christos Tzolis Over 1.5 Shots @ 1.22

Christos Tzolis is a player who always impresses me, and I’m keen to back him to attempt two or more shots on Saturday night. The classy Greek winger has been a standout for both club and country over the last couple of years, and he should offer a huge attacking threat during this contest.

The 23-year-old forward scored with one of his three efforts on goal away at Denmark last time out, while he made the net bulge with one of his five attempts when Greece put Belarus to the sword on matchday one.

While Tzolis registered just one shot on goal against Scotland last month, he did attempt multiple efforts in each leg of the pair’s Nations League play-off tie earlier this year, registering three shots at this venue.

The Club Brugge ace has also been a serial shot-hitter in this season’s Champions League, racking up a sizable 14 attempts across his four appearances to date, covering the 2+ shot line on each occasion.

Now up against a Scotland side that will be happy to stick to plan A by sitting deep and soaking up pressure, Tzolis looks worthy of support to fire in at least two shots.

Scott McTominay Over 1.5 Shots @ 1.61

Scott McTominay scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory for Scotland at this venue back in March, and the Tartan Army will be hoping that their talisman can inspire them to another success on Saturday night. The Scotland star netted with one of his four efforts on goal during the aforementioned first leg of that Nations League play-off tie earlier this year, while he posted five attempts on goal during the return match in Glasgow three days later.

McTominay has since registered two or more shots on goal in three of Scotland’s four Group C games during the current World Cup qualifying campaign, one of which was against Denmark away from home.

On top of all that, McTominay has averaged 2.3 shots per game when representing Napoli in Serie A this season, while his shots per 90 average in the Champions League this term currently sits at 1.8.

With that in mind, I think McTominay looks a little overpriced to produce two or more shots in Piraeus on Saturday night.

📈 Greece v Scotland Form & Stats

Following a strong showing in the most recent edition of the Nations League, there was a real sense of optimism among Greece supporters about their country's chances of reaching a first World Cup since 2014. A resounding 5-1 win over Belarus on matchday one solidified that notion; however, any enthusiasm soon evaporated following losses to Denmark, both home and away, either side of a defeat against Scotland at Hampden. Consequently, Greece’s bid to make it to next summer’s showpiece has ended with two games left to go.

There has been no shortage of entertainment when Greece have been involved in Group C, with all four of their matches to date delivering over 2.5 goals, while three of those contests have broken the over 3.5 goal barrier. What’s more, both teams have scored in three of Greece’s opening four group games, including last month’s reverse fixture with Scotland.

It is fair to say that Scotland have exceeded expectations by guaranteeing at least a play-off spot heading into the final two matchdays in Group C.

After kicking off their campaign with a spirited 0-0 draw away at Denmark, Steve Clarke’s side have since taken top honours from their subsequent three fixtures, bagging a pair of wins over Belarus as well as coming from behind to claim a 3-1 victory when hosting Greece.

Despite their impressive points haul, Clarke and his players have been widely criticised for the manner of their performances, particularly in the wake of last month’s laboured 2-1 win over Belarus.

Scotland’s pragmatic style under Clarke can be attributed to the fact that the Scots have earned a combined total of just 17 corners across the opening four matchdays in Group C, failing to hit more than four corners in three of their four outings so far.

📔 Greece v Scotland Formation & Team News

Greece boss Ivan Jovanovic is well known for favouring a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Christos Tzolis and Vangelis Pavlidis the two danger men that Scotland will have to keep close tabs on during this contest.

Fotis Ioannidis and Giannis Konstantelias have both been ruled out of Greece's final two group games due to injury. Andrews Tetteh has earned his first call-up to the national team, while experienced midfielder Tasos Bakasetas has been drafted back into the squad.

Steve Clarke has made use of a rigid 4-2-3-1 formation during the current World Cup qualifying campaign, and he is likely to stick with that system on Saturday night.

Scotland have a number of injury issues to contend with ahead of Saturday’s showdown with Greece, with Angus Gunn, Billy Gilmour, Lennon Miller, Max Johnston, and Ross McCrorie all ruled out. Andy Irving, Connor Barron, Josh Doig, Lawrence Shankland, and Scott Bain have all earned a recall to the squad.

With the aforementioned Gunn missing out through injury, Clarke faces a huge decision in terms of who starts between the sticks.

On a brighter note, Lewis Ferguson and Ryan Christie are available after both were suspended for last month’s 2-1 win over Belarus.
