The San Siro is Sunday night’s venue as Inter take on Lazio in the Serie A. After Inter’s game against Bologna was postponed on Thursday, this will now be their first game back after the Christmas break, as they look to take advantage of the few more days rest over Lazio.
Inter are currently the team in charge, as they sit top of the table by one point but with a game in hand. The current champions are still showing what they’re worth, as a run of seven wins in a row helps them stake their claim for another league title. With Inter being unbeaten at home, this will pose a difficult task for Lazio, as they will try to stop a team that are full steam ahead in their title charge.
Lazio, on the other hand, are sitting in eighth place, coming off a thrilling 3-3 draw against Empoli in their first game returning from the Christmas break. Despite sitting eighth, they have the same amount of points as sixth place and only three points away from 5th. Their challenge for a spot in Europe is an urgent matter at hand, and they will be looking to get a run of results to cement a place in the top six.
Inter manager Simone Inzaghi will be hosting a club he knows very well. He not only played for Lazio many moons ago, but he also managed them from 2016 to 2021, when he then left for Inter. He will be putting his emotions for Lazio aside, as his team will be pushing for a win on Sunday.
Inter Milan vs Lazio Bet Builder Tips
Lautaro Martínez to Score Anytime
With Lautaro Martínez scoring three goals in his last three league appearances, I expect him to carry on his stellar form and find himself on the scoresheet yet again. The Argentinian currently has 11 goals in the league this season, which is a tally that is amongst the leaders of the top-scorers’ charts. With Inter in blazing form, it would be no surprise to see Martínez get involved with the fun and be a key player when putting goals past Lazio. Racking up a total of 4.22 shots per game, the 24-year-old is more than involved at the top of the pitch, as he frequently manages to create attempts at goal. The number of opportunities that he has during games leads me to the assumption that with his quality, there will be a high chance of him stealing a goal for himself.
To be able to score a good amount of goals, you need the right players around you. For Martínez, he has just that. Inter have scored 13 goals in their last four league games, meaning that when they win, they manage to win comfortably. In a team that is producing a large amount of goalscoring chances and frequently putting the ball in the net, this increases Martínez’s chance even more of getting on the scoresheet, due to the sheer quality of players that he has around him that will be able to create shooting opportunities.
For those that love a good stat, I have you covered: Martínez has always scored in his first match in a calendar year. With the previous game against Bologna postponed, I see no reason why he can’t carry that stat on Sunday.
Pedro to be Booked
During the game, Lazio will be under the cosh. With Maurizio Sarri as their manager, his style of play dictates that every player must get involved with every side of the game. This means that attacking players will be required to come back and help defend. With an Inter team that are extremely good when attacking, the defensive responsibilities of players like Pedro may be called upon more often than not.
With the Spaniard being booked in his last two games, it seems like his defensive frustration is starting to show, which is why I believe that this is a game where he can pick up another yellow card. With Lazio being solid going forward but shaky at the back, it will be no surprise to see Pedro track back and make some rash challenges under pressure and exceed his average of 1.56 fouls committed per game. This was seen in his previous match versus Empoli, where he had a knack for making some bad challenges that eventually resulted in him finding himself in the referee’s notebook.
With the referee for the match averaging 4.83 cards per game, we can see the yellow card being dished out on occasion, and the odd bad tackle may not be dealt with leniently by the ref, meaning that one wrong move from Pedro could mean that he could see himself carded.
Both Teams to Score
Inter, a team that are flying high in the table and are ruthlessly defeating their opponents, face a Lazio side who are in top notch attacking form this season. With the likes of Immobile, Milinkovic-Savic and Felipe Anderson posing an immediate threat to goal, Inter could see their clean sheet dissipate, whether they comfortably win the match or not.
Lazio have seen all their last six games feature both sides scoring, highlighting not only their defensive issues, but their ability to produce moments of attacking quality. This is backed up by Lazio scoring 17 goals in their last six games meaning that despite problems at the back, they are still able to put a good number of goals past their opponents. With Inter being the favourites, the hosts may be able to comfortably win the game, but I fully expect Lazio to carry their reputation of having a strong attacking threat into the match and putting the ball in the Inter goal.
Inter scoring goals on Sunday won’t be an issue, as they have managed to score in all of their 19 matches in the league this season. One thing to keep an eye on though, is the fact that Inter have conceded 33% of their goals after the 75th minute. This means that if Lazio haven’t been able to score in the earlier phases of the match, the chance of them scoring late on would be very much on the cards.
