AS Roma will travel to Turin to take on Scudetto-chasing Juventus at the Allianz Stadium as the curtain falls on this weekend’s Serie A action, and indeed 2023. This one is set up to be an absolute firecracker of a game under the lights and there are plenty of interesting betting angles to explore ahead of the clash. There is simply no better way to round off the weekend’s football.
Juventus bounced back after their disappointing 1-1 draw with Genoa to record a 2-1 victory over Frosinone last weekend as Dusan Vlaahović netted a late winner from the bench. That win kept the pressure on leaders Inter Milan and in the process stretched the home side’s unbeaten run to 12 games, and Massimiliano Allegri’s team should arrive here confident of collecting three more points.
Jose Mourinho would have been delighted to see his Roma side return to winning ways as they beat nine-man Napoli 2-0 in a lively affair last Saturday following their 2-0 defeat to Bologna. Lorenzo Pellegrini scored the first and Romelu Lukaku capped an excellent performance as he scored the second late on having come back into the side following a one-match suspension.

🏆 Match stats: Old Lady too strong at home
With no European football to contend with this season, Juventus have been able to focus solely on domestic competition and are putting together a sustained challenge for the Serie A title. The preferred 3-5-2 system, with the wing backs willing to get forward and track back has made them compact and difficult to beat and as a result they are strongly fancied to secure another win here.
Allegri’s side have been impressive on home turf, winning six of their eight fixtures with only a stubborn Bologna team and title rivals Inter Milan preventing them from securing a victory here this season. Four of those wins also came to nil as Juventus have been resolute at the back, conceding just four home goals, which is the best defensive record of any team in the division.
AS Roma themselves have been excellent when playing at the Stadio Olímpico, but it’s on their travels where they have been somewhat inconsistent. Mourinho’s side have won just two of their eight away games this term and have failed to score in three of those. With abject performances on the road in recent losses to Verona, Genoa and Bologna, it’s difficult to see past a Juventus win.
Predictions:
⚽ Juventus to win @ 1.53
⚽ Juventus to win to nil @ 2.88
🎯 Shooting stats: Vlahović with a point to prove
Dusan Vlahović openly admitted that it was difficult to accept Allegri’s decision to drop him to the bench for the game against Frosinone last time out, but the Serbian striker certainly reacted in the best possible way by scoring the winner having replaced Keenan Yildiz on the hour mark. That reaction may be enough to earn a recall to the starting 11, especially with Federico Chiesa an injury doubt.
Vlahovic is by far and away the main attacking threat for Juventus and he’s taken to trouble a usually stubborn AS Roma defence that has given up the fewest shots in the league this season. The forward has amassed 38 shots at a rate of 3.81 per 90 minutes as well as registering 14 on target, which is 1.40 per game, and that’s the most of any other player in Allegri’s squad.
The former Fiorentina man has scored six goals this season and with a point to prove, he could be on target again here. Interestingly, Vlahović scored in this fixture last season as the points were shared in a 1-1 draw and it’s been reported in the Italian media that he’s desperate to earn a place in the starting XI for this one. That commitment and desire could be enough to see him on the scoresheet.
Predictions:
⚽ Dusan Vlahovic to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.36
⚽ Dusan Vlahovic to score anytime @ 3.0
⛳ Corners stats: Visitors to boss corner count
Roma are currently averaging exactly five corners per game this season having racked up a total of 85 in their 17 games thus far. Interestingly, the home side themselves give up an average of 4.88 per 90 minutes and Mourinho’s side are fancied to get opportunities, especially if the Juventus wing backs get caught high up the field meaning the visitors get joy on the flanks.
Mourinho’s side managed to win the corner match bet against Napoli last weekend 4-0, and that’s even more impressive when you consider they are the league leaders in the corner market. In their last two away fixtures, Roma won 11 against Sassuolo in a 2-1 win and then managed to win four corners against a robust Bologna defence that don’t give up many, despite losing the game 2-0.
In the recent head-to-head meetings at this ground between these sides, AS Roma have enjoyed plenty of success on the corner front, winning five, six, nine and five in their last four visits here at an average of 6.25 per game. Therefore, backing them to win at least three or four in this latest encounter is more than achievable and represents plenty of value, so that’s the calculated play based on the statistics.
Predictions:
⚽ Over 2.5 Roma corners @ 1.25
⚽ Over 3.5 Roma corners @ 1.65
🛑 Cards and fouls stats: Kostic on fouls watch
Simone Souza has been chosen to officiate this game and that could be beneficial for any bet builder. The Italian referee leads the league for the number of fouls given with an average of 29.80 per game this season, while also dishing out 5.60 yellow cards. In the five games he has overseen this campaign, two of them have seen red cards, so we can expect a stop-start game and a few cards.
One player that certainly catches the eye from a betting angle is Juventus left wing back Filip Kostic. The Serbian has committed 13 fouls in as many starts and is likely to be up against Rasmus Kristensen on that side who likes to maraud forward and draws the odd foul. From an attacking perspective, Gianluca Mancini could be a problem for Kostic as he also draws 1.06 fouls per game.
Kostic was booked in both games last season and Juventus are backed to rack up a few cards here, especially as they have already collected 44 in their 17 matches, the fourth most in Serie A. Interestingly, when playing Roma other sides have received 52 yellows, whereas when playing Juventus, the opposition have only received 30 yellows, which is the second-lowest in the league.
Predictions:
⚽ Filip Kostic to commit one or more fouls @ 1.20
⚽ Filip Kostic to be shown a card @ 4.20
⚽ Juventus to receive the most cards @ 2.10
