Following the Spanish National Team’s Euro 2024 success, excitement is building ahead of the start of the 2024/25 La Liga season. Athletic Club and Getafe will clash on August 15th, opening what is set to be an exciting term in the Spanish top flight.
Following disappointing campaigns, Cadiz, Almeria and Granada were ejected from La Liga last season. This trio have been replaced by Leganes, who will be playing La Liga football for the first time since 2020; as well as Espanyol and Real Valladolid, both of whom spent just one season away from Spain’s top division.
Each of the three newly promoted sides will be hoping to avoid a similar fate to that of Granada, who were the most recent team to fail to survive in their first season back in La Liga.
Real Madrid will be hoping to retain their title, however, Ancelotti’s men will need to fend off rivals Barcelona and Atletico. The battle for a place in the league’s top four is set to be very interesting, with the bookies currently unable to select a favourite for fourth place out of Girona, Athletic Club, and Sociedad.

🏆 Real Madrid to Win Outright
Real Madrid comfortably executed yet another La Liga triumph last season, bringing their total to 36 league titles. Los Blancos concluded the campaign with 95 points, marking their most successful campaign since the 2011/12 season when they achieved the revered centurion status with 100 points.
The title winners managed an unbeaten season at home, with an impressive record of 16 wins and three draws. Carlo Ancelotti’s men did not drop out of the top two from the second gameweek onwards – a testament to their domestic dominance last season.
That record becomes even more notable when considering that Ancelotti had to contend with injuries to key players David Alaba, Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois. Militao and Courtois have already returned to first-team action, while Alaba is set to return close to the new year. The defensive trio are set to play a massive role in the upcoming season.
Over the summer, Los Blancos have been focused on tightening their grip on domestic proceedings. They have completed the marquee signing of Kylian Mbappe, who arrives from PSG on a free transfer, as well as Endrick, who was announced back in 2022. The highly-rated 18-year-old will arrive from Palmeiras, although it is uncertain whether he will land a spot in the starting eleven. Joselu, who netted a memorable brace in the Champions League semi-final last campaign, has also completed a permanent transfer to Real Madrid.
With the addition of Mbappe to an already star-studded attacking constellation, Ancelotti’s men look even stronger than they did last campaign.
🏆 Real Madrid to Win Outright
⚪ Real Madrid to Win La Liga and the Champions League
The first pick is on the shorter side, and one for a bet builder, but this second outright pick is backable as a single. In addition to their league title, Carlo Ancelotti also added another Champions League trophy to the Real Madrid cabinet after beating Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley. Los Blancos have now won 15 Champions League titles – more than double the tally of AC Milan, who are the next most successful team with seven trophies.
Real Madrid displayed an inability to accept defeat in Europe last season. After progressing through the group stages with a flawless record of six wins from six, Los Blancos edged past RB Leipzig after a difficult first leg in Germany. The quarter-finals witnessed a six-goal thriller against Man City, with the goals shared equally. In the second leg, a late Kevin de Bruyne equaliser took the game into penalties, before Ancelotti’s men prevailed at the Etihad, securing a spot in the next round.
The semi-final also proved far from smooth sailing, as Real Madrid found themselves trailing by a goal in the 88th minute of the second leg against Bayern Munich. However, a last-gasp brace from Joselu turned the tie on its head, meaning it would be another European final for Los Blancos. Following an efficient, ruthless performance at Wembley, European honours were once again secured for Real Madrid.
Ancelotti’s men added a Champions League and La Liga title to their cabinet last season and have added even more quality over the summer. They seem to be going from strength to strength under Ancelotti, making them favourable candidates to repeat that feat for the upcoming season.

4️⃣ Atletico Madrid to finish in the top 4
Diego Simeone, who is well-known for his pragmatism and ability to squeeze out results, was appointed as Atletico’s manager back in December 2011 and has since established himself as a mainstay in the Spanish capital. His first full season in charge of Atletico was the 2012/2013 campaign, and it was a highly successful one. The Argentinian secured a Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, and a third-place finish in the league.
Atletico have shown incredible consistency under the management of Simeone, accumulating at least 70 points and a subsequent top four finish in every season since his first full campaign.
Atletico comfortably secured a top four spot last season, finishing eight points clear of Athletic Club. They were able to leverage their home advantage, with 16 wins last season at the Metropolitano, resulting in 49 points – only Real Madrid managed more points in home territory. Antoine Griezmann was a standout performer and was the only Atletico player to feature in the La Liga Team of the Season. The Frenchman racked up 16 goals and six assists – more than any other Atletico player on respective metrics.
Having retained the services of their key players, Simeone should once again have his sights set on challenging at the summit of the Spanish top flight.
4️⃣ Atletico Madrid to finish in the top 4
🐻 Atletico Madrid to Win Outright (Without Real Madrid and Barcelona)
Girona pulled off a historic previous season, finishing the campaign in third place with 81 points – historically their best-ever season. They managed to keep the pressure on Real Madrid at the top of the pile for the majority of the season, losing just one of their first 23 league games. Their performance came as a fairly sizable surprise, given that Girona languished in a 10th-place finish in the season prior.
Artem Dovbyk deserves immense credit for being the catalyst of Girona’s rapid ascent – the Ukrainian striker topped the La Liga scoring charts last season, netting 24 times. However, Girona have been busy in the transfer market, with negative news surrounding the players that fashioned so many chances for the striker. Savio, who provided ten assists last season, has been moved onto Man City, while Aleix Garcia, Yan Couto and Eric Garcia have also departed.
Meanwhile, Atletico have released veteran striker Morata, but have replaced him with the highly-rated Samu Omordion from Alaves. He is potentially a player who can thrive under Simeone, given his physical profile, threat from set-pieces and tenacity. In addition, Robin Le Normand has been brought in to shore up the defence after an impressive Euro 2024 campaign.
Overall, it is clear that Atletico have strengthened so far in the transfer window, putting them in a good position for the upcoming season.
This bet has landed in 11 out of 12 seasons in which Diego Simeone has been manager of Atletico Madrid – only failing to land last campaign. Although it failed to win last season, Girona massively overperformed, and given the departures of many key players, it is unreasonable to expect them to hit similar heights.
🐻 Atletico to Win Outright (Without Real Madrid and Barcelona)
⬇️ Espanyol to be Relegated
Espanyol secured promotion back to La Liga after finishing fourth in La Liga 2 and progressing via the playoffs. They edged past Sporting Gijon by an aggregate score of 1-0 over two legs, before completing a comeback against Oviedo in the promotion playoff final.
Espanyol actually managed to qualify for the Europa League not too long ago in the 2018/2019 season. The season after, however, they finished rock bottom of La Liga, condemned to relegation after struggling to manage the fixture congestion.
Having made big-money signings, Espanyol have struggled financially in recent years. They were promoted back to La Liga at the first time of asking and finished 14th in the proceeding season, but their second relegation in four years was confirmed in the 2022/2023 campaign following a 19th place finish.
It has been a turbulent period for Espanyol, with no foreseeable respite as they will come into the Spanish top flight with the second-lowest total market value (according to Transfermarkt).
To compound concerns, top goalscorer Martin Braithwaite has departed for Gremio. The former Barcelona man netted 22 times last season for Espanyol, while also providing three assists – he was the most prolific striker in La Liga 2. On the surface, odds of 3.50 for Espanyol to be relegated looks too big for a newly-promoted side, especially given the aforementioned circumstances.
