I’m far from convinced about the Atalanta project at the moment. Gian Piero Gasperini developed the side as far as he could, winning the Europa League in the process, and has since moved on to Roma leading to former Southampton and Torino boss Ivan Juric stepping into his role as head coach.

Juric is quite a swing away from the methods of Gasperini and has been given the job for his solid work in the past with Torino. I do think that spell is doing a lot of the heavy-lifting for Juric, he lasted just four months in the dugout at Southampton with a win percentage of 12% having previously been dismissed after just a few months at Roma.

Lazio have netted 10 goals across their six games so far this season under the tutelage of Maurizio Sarri. I’m familiar with Sarri’s work from his time at Chelsea, and he likes to dominate the ball and play on the front foot at all times. Lazio netted three goals against Torino last time out and have scored in three of their last five outings. 

Atalanta have kept just one clean sheet across their last five matches, which was an away win against Torino. They’ve conceded in both of their home games in this recent period. Lazio managed to score against Atalanta in this fixture last season and also found the back of the net when they were the home side. Lazio have managed to score against Atalanta in four of the last five head-to-heads.

📈 Atalanta v Lazio Form & Stats

Atalanta have started steadily on paper with four wins and two draws from their opening six matches of the season. I think there is trouble ahead though for the home side, their first three matches of the season were against Pisa, Parma and Lecce which is a pretty fortunate start to the campaign. This period of the season will be more testing with Atalanta welcoming AC Milan in their next home clash.

It may sound like I’m being quite harsh on Atalanta given their start to the campaign, but my main frustration with them is the head coach. Ivan Juric is not at the level to successfully manage this crop of talented players, with the likes of Ademola Lookman and others held back by his passive approach. I think there will be a gap that opens up between these two sides and the more elite sides in Serie A as the season unfolds.

Lazio finished 7th in Serie A last season, missing out on European football on goal difference. This could end up playing to their advantage in the league with seven Serie A sides competing in Europe this year, including Atalanta, who have a game against Slavia Prague to come during the week.
