📂 Leeds v Man United Cheat Sheet
📈 Leeds v Man United Form & Stats
Leeds have avoided defeat since their 3-2 defeat against Manchester City, a run that has spanned six games and included matches against Chelsea and Liverpool. Leeds actually played Liverpool twice in this run and drew both games, including grinding out a gritty draw at Anfield - showcasing that Farke has made Leeds more difficult to beat on the road as well as at Elland Road this season.
Leeds do still save their best performances for the Elland Road crowd with just two defeats from their nine home games this season. They’ve scored 17 goals across these home matches (1.88 per game) which is a real strength for a newly promoted side. This tally is higher than the likes of Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool at home this season, so Leeds are making a real fight of trying to stay up this campaign.
Manchester United collapsed back to square one against Wolves last time out, and a lot of the blame has to fall on Ruben Amorim. His side looked confused in that game, similar to the performances we saw from United in the early stages of Amorim’s tenure. They only created an xG of 0.84 against a side that has conceded 40 goals across their 19 matches this term (2.10 per game).
Manchester United have an inconsistent record on the road with three wins, three draws and three losses from their nine away assignments. These games have been quite entertaining with 31 goals (15 scored, 16 conceded - 3.44 per game). United have only managed to win two of their last five matches across all competitions, indicating further inconsistency which is partnered with a bit of chaos for Manchester United this season.
📔 Leeds v Man United Formation & Team News
Leeds’ recent success comes down to Daniel Farke changing the formation and approach of Leeds, with the home side here currently lining up in a 3-5-2 shape. This system has allowed Leeds to remain competitive in the top flight, and signals a move away from the possession based football that Farke was trying to play.
He deserves a lot of credit for realising that something had to change, and has picked a set up which is in line with the general direction of travel in the Premier League. The main benefit of this shape is that Leeds have become a very tough side to breakdown - both home and away. Farke was on the verge of being sacked before Leeds put this run of form together, though I do expect sides to start to figure out this system in the coming weeks.
Ruben Amorim confused everyone with his shape and approach against Wolves last time out, with the United manager seemingly going back to a three at the back shape - despite saying just a few days ago that he will have to adapt to not having key players at the moment.
This switch back to the 3-4-3 seemed to confuse United players as well, who looked more settled in a 4-3-3 which was the shape that earned United a win over Newcastle, and only their second clean sheet of the season. It’ll be interesting to see how Amorim lines up here, as a 3-4-3 could spell a man to man approach as it mirrors the system Leeds will play.
I can see United struggling with the intensity and direct nature of this Leeds side. Both Chelsea and Liverpool have failed to win at Elland Road in the last few weeks, and United could be the latest victims of a renewed Leeds side who will have even more confidence after claiming a point on the road at Anfield last time out.
📊 Leeds v Man United Key Stats
Leeds have scored 17 goals across their nine home matches this season (1.88 per game).
Manchester United have seen 31 goals across their nine away matches this term (3.44 per game).
Only Aston Villa and Tottenham have beaten Leeds at home so far this season.
Manchester United remain without Bruno Fernandes, Amad and Bryan Mbeumo for this clash.
