Leicester v Ipswich
Kick Off: Sunday 18th May at 15:00
Competition: Premier League
As we head into the penultimate round of the Premier League, Leicester host Ipswich at the King Power Stadium for the last time until they meet next season in the Championship.
As much as both sides wish they were meeting under different circumstances, the fate of both clubs was sealed some time ago, with the gap to Tottenham in 17th too big to bridge.
Instead, Leicester and Ipswich will be playing to salvage some pride before they drop down to England’s second tier.
At present, they sit on level terms with 22 points, although Ipswich’s goal difference of -42 remains 5 better than Leicester’s, putting them marginally ahead of The Foxes in the league standings.
⭐ Leicester v Ipswich Predictions and Best Bets
Backing Jamie Vardy to score first at 6.0 actually does look like genuine value. He’s managed a goal and an assist over his last two games, and given Ipswich’s poor defensive record, he stands a strong chance of finding the back of the net once more. Additionally, given that the club have announced this will be his last game for The Foxes (on his 500th appearance), his team-mates will be desperate to see their skipper bag his 200th career goal for Leicester.
We also think that with the home advantage, Leicester should have enough in the tank to avoid a loss, with this selection priced at 1.33. Ipswich have won just four of their 36 games this season, and were firmly second-best in the reverse fixture, which they hosted, even though they did manage a draw in the end.
🔵 Leicester Pick Up Points Amid String of Losses
Although in the grand scheme of things, it’s hardly anything to write home about, the four points Leicester have managed to pick up in their last two league games has propelled them onto level terms with Ipswich in the battle for 18th.
A confident win v Southampton may have acted as a confidence booster, having suffered 17 defeats in their 19 games leading up to it.
Following that victory, the Foxes put in a respectable display as they held Nottingham Forest to a 2-2 draw away from home, impacting the Reds' bid to achieve Champions League qualification for next season.
Leicester created four big chances on that occasion, enjoying positive spells particularly towards the end, when they were undoubtedly the better of the two sides.
🔴 Ipswich Fail To Improve on Early-Season Performances
Unfortunately for Ipswich, there are very few positives to extract from their campaign, despite the money they spent in the build-up.
Consistently poor performances have led to this point, and unlike Leicester, they haven’t enjoyed a late boost to keep morale up.
Their sole win across their last 17 came against Bournemouth in early April, although they created far less than their opponents and were pretty fortunate to come away with the three points.
Since then, the Tractor Boys have produced four losses and two draws, most recently suffering defeat at the hands of Brentford, although some late pressure could serve as a source of encouragement for Ipswich, who have found similar spells hard to come by, especially in recent times.
📊 Leicester v Ipswich Head-to-Head Key Stats
There’s been very little to separate Leicester and Ipswich in recent showings of this fixture, with each of the previous three ending in 1-1 stalemates.
Despite none of the three consisting of a whole lot of chances, one constant across the matches has been late excitement.
Most recently, Ipswich were leading until late on, but a Kalvin Phillips red card shook things up and shifted the momentum in favour of Leicester. Eventually, the Foxes found a way through, striking a 94th-minute equaliser through Jordan Ayew.
The season before, both Championship showings featured similar late drama. At the King Power Stadium, Leicester led until an 89th-minute Ipswich equaliser levelled things up, and Ipswich, similarly, relied on a 93rd-minute goal from Sam Morsy to claim a point at Portman Road.
