What are the key match facts for Bayer Leverkusen v Borussia Monchengladbach?
With both sides enduring poor starts, it’ll be interesting to see what transpires when Leverkusen’s reliance on set-pieces meets Gladbach’s wastefulness in front of goal.
Of the nine goals to Leverkusen’s name, they’ve scored just two from open play (if you exclude the own goal v Copenhagen).
Gladbach are winless and goalless in the Bundesliga, despite generating 4.4 xG across their games.
Leverkusen are unbeaten across their last 11 meetings with Borussia Mönchengladbach.

🔴 Hjulmand Yet to Solve Leverkusen’s Attacking Issues
It hasn’t been an easy adaptation following Xabi Alonso’s departure - just ask Erik ten Hag, who was sacked after only two league games at the club.
Although Kasper Hjulmand was able to lead Leverkusen to their first win of the season against Eintracht Frankfurt, their three goals came from a penalty and two free kicks, which underlines their persistent struggle to create chances from open play.
In their two matches under ten Hag, Leverkusen created just 1.32 open play xG - in their two games since… still only 1.72.
Their midweek clash with Copenhagen summed things up - a 2-2 draw in which Leverkusen’s opener came from yet another Alejandro Grimaldo free kick, before a last-minute own goal spared them defeat. Once again, Leverkusen were firmly second best in terms of expected goals, against a team that, on paper, they should breeze past.
⚪ Mönchengladbach Empty-Handed Amid Failure to Convert Opportunities
Mönchengladbach issues, of which there have been plenty, stand in stark contrast to Leverkusen’s, as they continue to underperform in all areas of the pitch.
Mönchengladbach are yet to record a win in the Bundesliga, or even make it onto the scoresheet, having managed their sole point in their opening 0-0 draw against Hamburg. This sparked Gerardo Seoane’s dismissal, with fans left hoping for a new manager bounce.
Despite what you might assume, their underlying numbers aren’t all that bad - in fact, they’re the 6th best of any side. Unfortunately, Mönchengladbach’s 4.4 xG and 3.3 xGA have translated into five goals conceded and none scored.
📊 How Do Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach Compare?
Recent meetings between these two have rarely disappointed, with Leverkusen largely holding the upper hand.
They did the double last season, winning 3-1 at home and 3-2 away, and you have to go all the way back to 2019, some 12 games ago, for the last time Mönchengladbach claimed all three points. Goals have also been a common theme, with the last eight producing 28 in total, and at least three shots finding the back of the net in all but one.
