📔 Liverpool v Newcastle Formation & Team News
Eddie Howe opted for a different setup against PSG in midweek, with three central defenders. Dan Burn made his return to the side, while Lewis Miley played as a wingback. Joelinton was left out of the squad due to a groin injury, but Bruno Guimaraes was at least listed on the bench, so could play a part at Anfield.
Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Yoane Wissa will all expect a recall to the starting eleven this weekend, after only making appearances off the bench in Paris.
Arne Slot also has his own selection headache, as Joe Gomez picked up an injury last weekend, while Frimpong lasted just four minutes against Qarabag. With Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni out for the season, and Ibrahima Konate unavailable, Liverpool are looking light on defensive options.
Ryan Gravenberch could fill in at the back alongside Virgil van Dijk again, with Endo at right back. With Alexander Isak nursing a leg injury, he won’t be available to face his former club this weekend, meaning Hugo Ekitike should start up front.
📈 Liverpool v Newcastle Form & Tactics
After starting the season with five successive Premier League wins, Liverpool have won just five matches since, in what has been a rough period. The Reds were beaten 3-2 by Bournemouth last time out in the league, which broke a 10-game unbeaten streak, but even still, Arne Slot’s men had drawn six of those matches. That includes a 1-1 stalemate against relegation-threatened Burnley, and a 0-0 against Leeds.
However, they looked at their best in midweek against Qarabag, winning that game 6-0. That result means the Reds finished third in the Champions League standings, only behind Arsenal and Bayern Munich. They have been much more convincing in Europe, and will hope for domestic results to follow suit.
Newcastle’s draw against PSG means they dropped out of the top eight, and will have to play an additional playoff match. The Magpies did well to hang on to a point in the end, as PSG racked up 2.52xG from their 25 shots.
Eddie Howe’s men have won just three of their 16 matches on the road across all competitions this season, highlighting a potential vulnerability which should give Liverpool confidence. By contrast, Newcastle have won 13 of their 21 matches at St James’ Park.
📊 Liverpool v Newcastle Key Stats
