Malmö (+2) Handicap

Despite Malmö’s poor result at the weekend, they will come into this game with the belief that they can qualify for the UCL playoffs. The Mjällby performance was somewhat unlucky, despite not taking full control of the game, and we could have quite easily seen a draw.

The first encounter between Malmö and FCK proved the Danes may be slightly stronger as a unit, but I again expect a very tightly contested encounter, where Malmö will restrict their opponents as much as possible.

Under 3.5 Goals

The first game showed Malmö won’t be going for broke in trying to get a result in this tie, being hugely disciplined in closing down space centrally. Both teams were unable to break through the opposition’s defensive line, and only an early FCK goal would open up proceedings, as Malmö would have to commit more men forward.

Despite both being high-scoring generally, we should see another close game here, with little space afforded to either side.

  • The first leg finished 0-0 in Malmö last week

  • Both teams lost domestically at the weekend, further detaching Malmö from the top of the table

  • The winner goes through to the Champions League playoff round

After a congested and scoreless first leg, Malmö make the short trip across to Copenhagen for the decider, determining who goes through to the playoff stage of this year’s Champions League.

Malmö have, following a spell of positive form, produced two poor performances, creating very little in the first leg then losing to Allsvenskan leaders Mjällby by a 3-1 scoreline. FC Copenhagen also lost domestically, being defeated 3-2 at home by AGF on Friday, the team’s first league win in the first four rounds of Superligaen.

Copenhagen are clear favourites here, giving 1.75 for a home win. Malmö are expected to struggle, an away victory priced at a hefty 4.5 and the draw at 3.1.

A goalless first leg has pushed the goal line odds up, now over evens at 2.05 for over 2.5 goals, with the under providing odds of 1.75.

FC Copenhagen’s Stutters

After a blemish-free start to the young campaign, this past week has been challenging for FC Copenhagen. The first leg of this encounter was close and lacking in incision, ending in a relatively favourable 0-0 result.

The big land mine, however, came three days later, dropping their first points of the Superligaen campaign with an inefficient 3-2 loss to AGF. A combination of sloppy defensive play and a lack of sharpness offensively set the scene, with Copenhagen actually having the better opportunities, winning the xG battle 3.22 to 2.14. They missed a whopping five (!) big chances and deserved more from an open game, but conceded three before finding the net.

There was plenty of rotation to keep some of their most important starters, including Thomas Delaney and Elias Achouri, on the bench, coming on after an hour. Jordan Larsson started and scored a screamer, his third goal of the season, but it was too little, too late.

🔵 Malmö Erratic and Inconsistent

Inconsistencies have marred MFF’s season, struggling to find the right combination of controlled possession and attacking penetration. Of late, they had become a bit more productive, winning seven in a row, but in the last two matches, against FCK and Mjällby, performances have been less impressive.

While the FCK game was disciplined and controlled, but unexciting, Mjällby exploited Malmö’s defensive frailties, getting some help from lady luck in scoring one deflected goal and seeing a rare mistake from Robin Olsen, letting the ball in through his legs for the second. It was a tight encounter, but Mjällby, like they almost always do this season, overpowered Malmö with their intensity and directness. Malmö had their fair share of chances, amassing an xG figure of 2.10 to Mjällby’s 0.99, but were unable to take their chances in decisive moments.

This is a pivotal week for Malmö, and after the Mjällby defeat, the chances of recovering sufficiently to mount a title challenge are minimal. They remain fourth in Allsvenskan, 13 points off the top, and can at best hope to finish in the top three to qualify for Europe. That leaves this crucial qualifier as their last lifeline.

📊 Copenhagen v Malmö H2H

The first game of this tie ended 0-0 and lacked attacking impetus, both teams seemingly set on avoiding defeat. A total of 14 shots were taken, four of which for the home team Malmö, with only 0.69 xG created all game long.

Possession was even (51%-49%) and no big opportunities were created, most shots came from distance, only hitting the target once. Copenhagen looked to be more intentional with their play and nearly got into good opportunities on a few occasions.
