📂 Leeds v Man City Cheat Sheet
📈 Leeds v Man City Form & Stats
I’ve been very impressed with Leeds this season, and even more so with Daniel Farke. It looked like he was coming to the end of another unsuccessful term in the Premier League just before the initial league meeting between these sides, but he has found a way to remain competitive, with this change coming in the form of Leeds’ shape.
Farke switched to a 3-5-2 shape and Leeds haven’t looked back since, they’ve been direct in this system with Calvert-Lewin staying fit enough to ensure that they have enough goals to stay up in the division. Elland Road has been a particular strength of Leeds’ campaign this season, with Leeds only losing three of their 13 matches in front of their own fans this term.
Pep Guardiola has also been tinkering with his side throughout the season. I get the sense that he’s never truly been happy with the systems and shapes he’s tried already this season - but has found a bit of a breakthrough in recent weeks with a 4-1-3-2 shape, which has seen City win each of their last five matches across all competitions.
City’s away form in the Premier League this term hasn’t been ideal, they’ve only managed to win six of their 13 away matches in the division, so it may take them a while to find a way past a Leeds side that will be playing with plenty of confidence, having taken points off Chelsea and Aston Villa across recent week.
📔 Leeds v Man City Formation & Team News
As I touched on, Leeds should line up in a variation of a 3-5-2 shape. Farke has changed it slightly for certain games in recent weeks, but we can assume he’ll lean towards a more pragmatic approach for this game, with City expected to dominate proceedings.
It was in the earlier league meeting between these sides that Farke first changed his system, switching Leeds from a 4-3-3 into a 3-5-2, which resulted in Leeds almost managing a comeback, clawing back a two goal deficit only to lose the game in the final minute thanks to a Phil Foden strike.
Man City’s new shape is really fascinating and I’m excited to see how it develops as they look to stay close to Arsenal in the title race. I’m particularly interested in Semenyo, he was signed as winger but played in a very central role against Newcastle last time out, suggesting that Pep may see him as more of a player that can carry the ball through central areas.
Guardiola may have abandoned wingers altogether for now, it’s probably been the toughest position for players this season with sides doubling up on wide players and sitting in deep blocks - neutralising the pace and direct nature of wingers.
