Old Trafford will host a fixture for the last time this season when Manchester United host Newcastle on Wednesday evening in a Premier League tussle that could have a major impact on the race for continental qualification.

With standards slipping to alarmingly low levels, Erik ten Hag’s United are on course to post their worst-ever Premier League finish in 2023/24, though a third victory in 12 games would put them level on 57 points with Newcastle.
The Magpies meanwhile, are still in with a mathematical shot at finishing 5th, however, only a third win of the campaign over Man Utd will suffice if Eddie Howe’s side are to keep their Europa League hopes alive.

⚔️ Man United v Newcastle Head-to-Head
Manchester United and Newcastle have already crossed paths twice this season and on each occasion, Eddie Howe masterminded a comfortable win over his counterpart.
Howe chose to field a team of fringe players deployed in unorthodox positions when Newcastle were drawn to face holders Man Utd in the Last 16 of the Carabao Cup in November, however, the Magpies still roared to a hugely impressive 3-0 win, with young full backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall their star performers.
A month later, a Newcastle outfit at closer to full strength beat United 1-0 at St James’ Park in the Premier League, though the margin of victory could have been meatier after the Geordies mustered 22 shots to their visitors’ eight and an xGF of 2.40 to Man Utd’s 0.50.
Newcastle’s hard-running style and great physical intensity blew a meek Manchester United away on that occasion and nine of the Magpies’ ten outfielders had at least one shot.
Newcastle gave the Red Devils a similar offering when the teams met again at St James’ Park before that (April ’23), clocking 22 attempts in another comfortable 2-0 win. Indeed, Newcastle have won all three meetings between the clubs since last season’s Carabao Cup final defeat to the Red Devils at Wembley Stadium.
Premier League victories at Old Trafford have been like gold dust for Newcastle however, and the Magpies haven’t won a top-tier fixture at the Theatre of Dreams since a solitary Yohann Cabaye strike earned them the spoils there in December 2013.
Full back Kieran Tripper managed to claim an assist in each of Newcastle’s last two league meetings with Man Utd and the veteran defender, who made his comeback from injury off the bench against Brighton at the weekend, could be in contention to start on Wednesday.
Remarkably, Casemiro has played three times against Newcastle since moving to Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2022 and the Brazilian was shown a yellow card in each appearance.
📊 Man United Form and Stats
Manchester United’s slender 1-0 reverse at home to title-chasing Arsenal on Sunday was considered an improvement – which highlights just how miserable many of the Red Devils’ recent performances have been.
Erik ten Hag made some tactical tweaks against the Gunners, drafting workhorse Sofyan Amrabat into midfield to offer some more defensive stability alongside Kobbie Mainoo, and as a consequence, United had more possession (54.2% – 45.8%) and shots than (14-11) Arsenal.
The 11 attempts mustered by Arsenal was the second-lowest registered by any team against United in the Premier League since January 1st, which begs the question – why didn’t ten Hag make those tactical adjustments sooner?
Despite the more competitive nature of Sunday’s performance, United were still ultimately beaten for the 14th time in the league and 19th time in all competitions, which is the most they’ve suffered in a single campaign since 1977/78.
Even if United manage to win their final two league fixtures of the season, they will still finish with their lowest-ever points haul in the Premier League era, though their appalling-low ranking of 16th in the division for xGA (65.0) suggests things could have quite easily been worse. United have also been a bottom-half team for both goals for (52) and xGF (53.7) this term.
There is still an FA Cup final on the horizon to prepare for, however, a run of just two wins in 11 Premier League games isn’t exactly the ideal way to build the kind of momentum and confidence needed to test Manchester rivals City.
📊 Newcastle Form and Stats
A slew of injuries made for a dismal middle third of the season for Newcastle, though the Magpies have been in better shape in terms of personnel and performances in recent months.
Newcastle have lost only six times in 21 assignments in league and cup since January 1st, with losses to Man City (twice), Arsenal and Liverpool accounting for four of those defeats.
In the Premier League, the Magpies have been toppled just once in eight outings, though they have been leaning on fixtures at St James’ Park to get their business done for the most part. Newcastle have been averaging 2.10 points per game at home compared to just 1.0 points per match on the road this term.
In fact, only five clubs in the division have a worse away record than Newcastle this season, though four of their five victories on their travels this season have come inside their last seven away tests.
Ranking 6th for xGF (70.5) and 5th for xPTS (expected points) with 61.16, Newcastle (6th in the table) have been a good match for their performance metrics and they have scored a full 27 goals more than Wednesday’s opponents, Man Utd, this season.
Alexander Isak (20G, 1A), Anthony Gordon (10G, 10A), Bruno Guimaraes (6G, 6A), Kieran Tripper (1G, 10A), and Callum Wilson (9G, 1A) have all breached double figures for Premier League goal contributions in 2023/24, while 19 different Newcastle players have chipped in with goals of some description in the top-flight overall.
💰 Man United v Newcastle Best Bets
With Erik ten Hag low on fit defenders and his team equally low on confidence, this is a good time to play Manchester United and Newcastle double chance on Betfair at 1.44 represents great value.
Man Utd have dropped points in nine of their last 11 Premier League fixtures and in 50% of their 18 top-tier assignments at Old Trafford overall this season, and Newcastle – who have already beaten the Red Devils twice this term – can head to Manchester with confidence again.
Goal markets might be best avoided following the success of ten Hag’s tactical adjustments against Arsenal on Sunday however. The Dutchman might opt for solidity over chaos again on Wednesday evening and excitement could be limited for the second United fixture in a row as a consequence.
Instead, look for Anthony Gordon to have 1+ shots on target at 1.50 with Betfair – after he scored the winner for Newcastle against United in December. The 24-year-old tested the opposition keeper with at least one accurate effort in nine of his last 13 starts in the league and Gordon should pose a significant threat again in Manchester.
