After a three-year absence from the Champions League, Ajax tasted defeat on their return to the competition against a clinical Inter Milan. On Tuesday night, they will travel to Southern France hoping to get their first points on the board, although another tough test awaits them at the Velodrome.

These recommended Best Bet Builder Bookmakers are worth a look for the week's midweek Champions League action.

Marseille to Win @ 1.48

Marseille come into this midweek clash following back-to-back victories, having secured a late comeback against Strasbourg last time out on Friday night. Winning at the La Meinau Stadium has proven to be no easy task - only two sides managed an away victory against Strasbourg in the French top-flight last season. That result meant Roberto De Zerbi’s men have navigated a tough trio of games incredibly well.

Prior to Strasbourg, Marseille beat PSG 1-0 on Monday night, tarnishing the Parisians’ perfect start to the season. Although the visitors were without Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, take nothing away from what was an excellent performance from Marseille - they restricted the French champions to just 0.67 xG from 12 shots.

Marseille also gave a good account of themselves at the Bernabeu in their first European outing of the season, and were unfortunate to lose 2-1, with both goals conceded coming from the penalty spot. If they can eliminate those errors, Marseille will really fancy their chances of securing victory on home turf.

Both Teams to Score @ 1.70

Marseille have looked in good touch of late, and they come into this clash as favourites, but they shouldn’t underestimate this Ajax side, who have plenty of European pedigree. The four-time Champions League winners have been in solid form this season, and still have their domestic unbeaten record intact after seven Eredivisie games.

Ajax were beaten 2-0 in the Champions League by Inter Milan on matchday 1, but they put up a fight against the Italian side, and the scoreline really doesn’t do them justice. Their xG tally of 1.26 was actually greater than their Italian opponents, as Ajax just weren’t as clinical on the night. An impressive opening gambit against last season's finalists.

Since that result, Ajax managed to take a point from the Philips Stadium against PSV, holding on for a 2-2 draw, before securing victory against NAC Breda last time out. With 14 goals in seven league matches, Ajax have been capable going forward, and will hope to maintain that goalscoring form.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to have 1+ Shots @ 1.25

Geoffrey Kondogbia really struggled against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, and conceded the penalty for Kylian Mbappe to score his first of the night. He racked up a total of four fouls, while he also made two errors, which led to Real shots, before being substituted after 67 minutes.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg looked much more assured in midfield, and has played the full 90 in three consecutive games for Marseille. In tough matchups against Real Madrid, PSG and Strasbourg, he registered a total of three attempts at goal.

The former Tottenham man is averaging 1.88 shots per 90 this season, landing this bet in six out of seven appearances in all competitions, only failing to land it at the Bernabeu. Marseille should be able to exert a lot more pressure at home on Tuesday night, which should get Hojbjerg into more promising, advanced areas.

Leonardo Balerdi to Commit 1+ Fouls @ 1.30

Leonardo Balerdi had an average of 1.1 fouls per 90 in all competitions last season for Marseille, which is high for a centre-back. The Argentinian international has been able to maintain those numbers in the new campaign, landing this selection in five out of six starts overall.

Marseille made several defensive acquisitions over the summer, but Balerdi seems to still be the preferred option at the back - he has missed just one game this term, but played the full 90 in the other six matches in all competitions. In that time, he has already picked up two bookings.

The Marseille centre back pairing are tasked with being extremely aggressive in their press, and Balerdi will find duels against Wout Weghorst, who seems to have shaken off a back injury. The Dutchman made an appearance off the bench at the weekend, and has drawn 11 fouls in his six starts this term.

📈 Marseille v Ajax Form & Tactics

After a tough start to the season during which Marseille lost two of their opening three matches, Les Phoceens have looked a lot more confident and settled since the international break, with new signings integrating well.

In their first game after the break, Facundo Medina, Benjamin Pavard and Nayef Aguerd all made their debuts under Roberto De Zerbi, and the latter pair marked the special occasion with a goal. Marseille cruised to a 4-0 victory against a Lorient side that received a red card after just 10 minutes. The backline that started at the Bernabeu was comprised of four players who had all only joined Marseille in the summer, but they seemed to gel well enough.

Marseille bounced back from that 2-1 defeat well, securing their first win at the Velodrome against PSG in 14 years, pushing OM back towards the top of the Ligue 1 standings.

Ajax might still have their undefeated record intact after seven league games, but they have drawn three of those matches, so they currently sit below title-rivals PSV and Feyenoord in the standings. Ajax had the 2nd-best away record in the Eredivisie last season, but have dropped points in all three of their matches on the road so far, which is a record that doesn’t bode well for them here.

📔 Marseille v Ajax Formation & Team News

Roberto De Zerbi has been quite variable in his tactical setups, similar to how he was at Brighton, but is likely to stick with his trusted 4-2-3-1 formation. The more defensive-minded Benjamin Pavard started at right back at the Bernabeu, but with Marseille coming into this clash as favourites, Amir Murillo is perhaps more likely to get the nod to start. The full back scored the winning goal against Strasbourg last time out.

Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang featured only for the final 30 minutes in that match, and are likely to slot back into the starting XI in midweek.

Wout Weghorst was taken off early against Inter Milan, and missed the next game against PSV with a back injury. He did make a brief appearance off the bench against NAC Breda at the weekend, so he could be in line to start. Ajax are light of options upfront - 19-year-old Don-Angelo Konadu led the line last time out, but was replaced at half time.
