Xabi Alonso’s perfect start to the season came to an abrupt end at the weekend, as his Real Madrid side were dismantled by Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

It was their heaviest derby defeat since the 2014/15 campaign, and the first time they had conceded five goals to their city rivals since 1950/51. Still, Los Blancos have started the season in fine form, and will hope to bounce back from their recent setback.

These recommended Best Bet Builder Bookmakers are worth a look for the week's midweek Champions League action.

Over 2.5 Goals

Despite their weekend defeat, Los Blancos come into this Champions League clash as short as 1.1 to secure victory in Kazakhstan, and will be hoping to get back on track with a comfortable victory. Real Madrid have been dangerous in the final third, and have scored 18 goals from their eight matches in all competitions so far.

However, they have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last six, and Kairat will fancy their chances of at least getting on the scoresheet and giving their home fans something to cheer about.

It is much more likely for Kairat to be focused on damage limitation, as opposed to taking any points from their Spanish opponents, but the Kazakhstan side did manage to score against Sporting in round one of the Champions League, which should give them some confidence.

Over 0.5 Real Madrid Cards

Losing 5-2 in the Madrid derby was definitely a shock result, and it will be interesting to see how Xabi Alonso’s men bounce back. I’m expecting them to play with a bit more urgency and aggression here, as they look to atone for their mistakes at the weekend. We could also see some rotation, with players like Raul Asencio and Eduardo Camavinga drafted in from the start.

Real Madrid like to commit bodies forward, which can leave them slightly vulnerable in transition. Kairat will look to play on the break, where they were able to cause problems for Sporting at times in their first European outing this season. In fact, the hosts were shown four bookings in total, with two of those awarded in the first half.

Real Madrid have been shown a booking in all eight matches this season, including against the newly-promoted Real Oviedo and Levante, games which Los Blancos won by a 7-1 aggregate scoreline.

Kylian Mbappe to Score Anytime

It’s impossible to talk about Real Madrid without mentioning Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman has been unstoppable this season and has scored 12 goals in ten appearances in all competitions, including international games. In total, he has landed this bet in nine out of ten matches, highlighting his excellent form.

Diego Simeone’s tactics managed to keep Mbappe quiet for large parts of the game, and the 26-year-old registered just one attempt at goal, but that was all he needed to score. Despite the poor result, Mbappe has been ruthless in front of goal this term, and Kairat simply don’t have the capacity to contain a player of his quality.

Only Mallorca have stopped Mbappe from scoring against them this season, but even in that game, the Frenchman had an early goal disallowed, while also registering a total of five shots.

Jorginho to have 1+ Shots

Kairat were comprehensively outclassed on their opening night in the Champions League by Sporting Lisbon, but they did manage to get on the scoresheet late on through Edmilson. The Kazakhstan side were reliant on counter-attacks, and they managed to carve out a total of nine shooting opportunities.

Jorginho got two shots off, both of which were taken from outside the box, and missed the target. The Portuguese international also landed this bet against Celtic in the Champions League playoffs, registering two shots on home turf, and another two in Scotland.

Although Real Madrid are a cut above the level of opponent Jorginho is used to facing, he is a player who fancies himself from distance, and isn’t afraid to try his luck. The 27-year-old will be the main threat for Kairat in the final third, and will hopefully look to exploit a Madrid side still licking their wounds.

📈 Kairat Almaty v Real Madrid Form & Tactics

Last season, Kairat Almaty won their first league title since 2020, and they are on track to make it back-to-back domestic trophies. After 24 games, they are currently top of the Kazakhstan Premier League, having won their last three consecutive league games. However, the Champions League has proven to be a few levels above what they are used to, and they were picked apart by Sporting Lisbon in round one.

The hosts racked up 21 shots worth 3.81 xG, translating that to four goals. That was even despite Sporting spurning five big chances, including a missed penalty. Midweek, Kairat were able to return to winning ways, securing their 16th victory of the season to maintain their two-point gap on second place.

Early on in his tenure as Real Madrid manager, Xabi Alonso was dealt a 4-0 defeat against PSG to knock them out of the Club World Cup - perhaps the feeling around camp now is similar. Despite the lengthy summer break before the next competitive fixture, his side responded to that setback by winning seven matches to kick off the new campaign. The Spaniard will hope once again that defeat can warrant a strong response, and this matchup against Kairat is ideal to get back on track.

📔 Kairat Almaty v Real Madrid Formation & Team News

But such a damning defeat is likely to bring personnel changes. Raul Asencio replaced Eder Militao at half-time in the Madrid derby and will be pushing for a start in the Champions League. Jude Bellingham’s return to the starting lineup after recovering from injury didn’t quite go to plan, and the Englishman is likely to be rested midweek as Alonso is expected to manage his minutes. Franco Mastantuono will be the player hoping to take his spot after scoring his first goal of the season against Levante.

Trent-Alexander Arnold picked up an injury on his Champions League debut for Real Madrid against Marseille, while Dani Carvajal was also taken off in the Madrid derby. Raul Asencio, who had replaced Eder Militao at half-time, had to fill in at right back for the final 30 minutes. Carvajal seems set to miss this clash, while the Brazilian is touch-and-go, more likely to sit this one out.

Kairat were able to make some changes at the weekend, as Jorginho featured only in the second half of their domestic clash. However, the Portuguese international seems set to start against Real Madrid, as Kairat are likely to deploy a similar system as we saw against Sporting Lisbon.
