Midtjylland will aim to maintain their 100% Europa League record when they face Celtic in a league phase match at the MCH Arena on Thursday evening.

The Danish hosts are setting the pace in the league phase standings after claiming a comfortable 3-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv.

As for Celtic, they claimed their first continental success of the season on matchday three by coming from behind to claim a 2-1 win against Sturm Graz.

The Hoops will head to Scandinavia in high spirits after reaching the Scottish League Cup final with an extra-time victory over rivals Rangers on Sunday.

Midtjylland Double Chance

Given how strong a start to the season Midtjylland have made, I think the hosts look well placed to avoid defeat on Thursday night. Not only have the Danes made an impressive start to their Europa League campaign, they have also proven to be a tough nut to crack domestically this term.

Mike Tullberg’s team have lost just one of their opening 14 Danish Superliga matches of the season, with that solitary setback coming against Nordsjaelland back in mid-September. Impressively, that is the only defeat that the Danish heavyweights have suffered across their 25 matches in all competitions this season.

While Celtic head to Denmark in a buoyant mood, both physical and mental fatigue could be an issue for the away side here given that this will represent their 5th match in the space of 14 days. It’s also worth noting that Celtic were unable to defeat 10-man Rangers inside 90 minutes on Sunday. On top of that, the Hoops are notoriously poor travellers in Europe, failing to win away at both Kairat Almaty and Red Star Belgrade earlier this season.

Both Teams to Score

While I don’t envisage Celtic emerging victorious on Thursday evening, I think they are more than capable of contributing to the scoring. The Hoops have racked up a combined total of 7 goals across their two matches under Martin O’Neill’s watch, and they carry the necessary attacking threat to breach a Midtjylland backline that is not exactly watertight.

The hosts have failed to keep a clean sheet in a sizeable 10 of their 14 Danish Superliga matches this season, with both teams netting in 9 of those contests, including 7 of the Wolves’ eight games at home. On top of that, Midtjylland failed to silence Scottish Premiership opposition when hosting Hibernian in a Europa League qualifier earlier this season.

Throw in the fact that both teams have scored in two of Celtic’s three Europa League matches this season, then all the signs point towards a repeat at the MCH Arena on Thursday evening.

Celtic 4+ Corners

Celtic have long been one of my favourite sides to back in regards to total team corners, and I would expect them to earn a minimum of four on Thursday evening. The Scottish giants have racked up a combined total of 20 corners across their three outings in this season’s Europa League, covering the 4+ line on each occasion, one of which was away at Red Star Belgrade.

On the domestic scene, the Hoops have averaged in the region of 8.00 flag kicks per 90 in this season's Scottish Premiership. While it’s a small sample size, it's also worth mentioning that Celtic have taken 20 corners across their two matches under Martin O’Neill’s guidance, hitting 14 against Rangers last time out.

As for the hosts, they have already been forced to defend 17 corners in this season's Europa League, not to mention AGF earned 5 flag kicks at this venue on Monday night.

Johnny Kenny to have 1+ Shots on Target

Johnny Kenny has caught the eye since Martin O’Neil has stepped into the Celtic hotseat on a short-term basis. The Celtic striker bagged a brace during last week's 4-0 win over Falkirk, and he then proceeded to score the opening goal of the game against Rangers at Hampden on Sunday.

With Kenny full of confidence and likely to lead the line again on Thursday evening, he looks an attractive option to register a minimum of one on-target effort.

While the Irishman has only featured once for Celtic in this season’s Europa League, it would be fair to say that he made an impression against Sturm Graz on matchday three. In fact, Kenny racked up 6 shots during that contest, 2 of which hit the target.

As mentioned, Kenny has since benefited from Martin O’Neill’s return to the club, so I think there is plenty of scope for him to make his mark against a Midtjylland side that have seldom been able to silence their opponents when playing at home this season.

📈 Midtjylland v Celtic Form & Tactics

While Midtjylland have made a perfect start to their Europa League campaign, they are not having things all their own way in the Danish Superliga this season. Mike Tullberg's side needed a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw when hosting league leaders AGF on Monday night. The result leaves the Wolves in second place in the Danish top-flight table, two points off the summit.

No team has scored more goals than Midtjylland (8) in this season’s Europa League, with the Danish outfit hitting multiple goals in each of their three matches so far, most notably striking 3 times when defeating Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Midtjylland are also the leading scorers in this season’s Danish Superliga, racking up 36 goals across their opening 14 games of the campaign, striking twice or more in 10 of those tussles.

Following a turbulent start to the season, Celtic interim manager Martin O'Neill has brought a real sense of optimism back to the club over the last week or so. The former Bhoys boss steered the Glasgow heavyweights to a 4-0 win over Falkirk last midweek before masterminding a Scottish League Cup semi-final victory over Rangers at Hampden on Sunday.

Celtic have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their three matches in this season’s Europa League, with both teams scoring in two of those contests. It’s also worth noting that the Bhoys’ backline has been breached in four of their last five domestic matches, conceding multiple goals in three of their last four Scottish Premiership fixtures.

Only four other teams have earned more corners than Celtic (20) across the opening three rounds of league phase action in this season’s Europa League.

📔 Midtjylland v Celtic Formation & Team News

Mike Tullberg has made use of a number of different formations during the early months of his time in charge of FC Midtjylland, including a 3-4-3 and a 4-3-3, while he opted for a 3-4-2-1 system against AGF on Monday night.

The Midtjylland boss will be unable to call upon the services of injured trio Adam Gabriel, Edward Chilufya and Ovie Ejeheri on Thursday night. Philip Billing has already been shown 2 yellow cards in the Europa League this season, and another here would result in a one-match suspension.

While Celtic have continued to set up with a 4-3-3 system under caretaker boss Martin O'Neill, there has been a noticeable difference with the energy and directness in which the Hoops have played with.

Hampden hero Callum Osmand won’t feature for Celtic on Thursday evening as he has not been registered for European competition this season. Alistair Johnston and Kelechi Iheanacho both missed Sunday’s win over Rangers, though the latter could return for this clash. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota will definitely miss out for the visitors.
